I have just had the new tyre from my spare changed on to my alloy caravan wheel and the tyre from the alloy put onto the spare after it was punctured and repaired.
When taking them in I asked for the puncture repair and to swap the tyres over and to balance the wheels. After collecting them this afternoon, I have just noticed there are no balance weights on either the steel spare wheel or the alloy wheel.
Am I right in thinking that caravan wheels should be balanced like car wheels, surely an out of balance caravan wheel could cause vibration in the van if out of balance.
Before ringing the tyre fitters tomorrow does anyone know if I am right or wrong?
Thanks
An unbalanced wheel can cause vibration. One tyre fitter once said to me thought hat you will not notice vibration in a caravan and having blance weights fitted to the rim can cause air leakage as the caravan sits on the drive.
I can't see any balance weights on our wheels, but I suppose swift might have fitted them to the inside edge of the rims.
Swift don't balance the wheels on a new caravan (There is a discussion on this on their forum). I had Tyron bands fitted and the fitter did balance the wheels but only had to put a very small weight on each. He said he always did it but you don't really need to bother.
balanced /unbalalanced would have thought it personal choice, personally not had a problem with vibration with the caravan , but then i don't take it over 60mph,
have never had any vibration problems with anything i've ever driven below that speed have only experienced " wheel wobble" at speeds in excess of 65mph, then its been off to the tyre shop for balancing etc

Having just fitted shock absorbers to my caravan, I also took the wheels to be balanced and they needed quite a bit of shiny lead to get them in balance. Having just returned from a weekend away, I have noticed that my fuel economy has gone up by ~10%. Is this coincidence? The caravan also feels rock steady now.

The OP is talking about alloy wheels. It is normal to use stick-on weights on the inside of the wheel.

Thats one tyre fitter I would not let any where near my tyres ALL wheels need to be balanced whether you can feel vibration or not,an unbalanced wheel can still do the same damage, even more so on a caravan
I think realbusdriver hit the nail on the head when he says vibration from an unbalanced wheel isn't noticeable below 60 MPH and vans shouldn't be towed faster than that.
How do you know the alloy wheel has not been balanced? Fitters now use the self adhesive leads and these should be fitted to the inside of the wheel not the outside so it is possible that you cannot see that it has been balanced. They may have also fitted them to the inside of the steel as well.

An unbalanced wheel causes more wear on wheel bearings and suspension bushes, also this can cause travel sickness if its on a car, as the caravan or trailer is conected to to car it would stand to reason that any vibration in the caravan could possibly induce travel sickness too.
Fuel economy is also effected by anything which is out of balance especially wheels, not sure if it would make 10% difference but I suppose it could make a difference.

only guessing here but if it's an alloy, it'd have quite large gaps between the spokes, maybe shining a torch through the gaps may allow you to see the weights
