Out of interest I've just compared our usual site which has no toilets & showers with the nearest site that does (both camping & caravanning club sites, Ebury Hill & Oswestry, Shropshire) & the difference is a whopping £8.98 per night!!

I understand that loo blocks & showers have to be cleaned, loo roll provided & the cost of water but I can't see how they justify £9 a night.

I think it will be a bit more than just the addition of toilets!  Plus campsites charge what they charge because they can!!  They all seem to be full these days.

They also have to pay for the removal of the sewage and waste water, maintenance of the toilet block, water, electric etc so £8 is cheap.

It is a business, the owners do it to earn a living so who can blame them. They add facilities they expect a reward. They probably paid out £20k up front to supply the facilities. However, pricing involves many different factors. Quality of the sanitation, availability of hook up, attractiveness of site, ease of access, location, and strength of repeat business to name a few.

At the end of the day you pays yer money, you makes yer choices.

It's not a criticism just an observation, I agree that sites have to make money & have no problem at all with it but hadn't realised just how much people paid to use a loo block, our site has 100 pitches & so could generate up to £900 a day if it had loos!

Imagine if you had to walk to reception and hand over £9 a day for a key to the block, we've totalled up 33 nights this year so far at Ebury so have saved a massive £297 by using our own shower & loo.

Some of the sites have their pitch fees based upon the local surroundings, etc., so the amenities, or absence of them, isn't a prime consideration when setting the pitch fees.

and if you do not have the luxury of your own shower or loo what then methinks. Phewwwww!!!

On saying that I have to use the disabled facilities so having a shower unless it was a suitable one is not good. As I have a  fc I do take a porta potti in a plinth but a shower noooooooooooooo!!! so as I do not want to phewwwwww!!!!  I pay up. As we have just spent 63 nights away I am not even going to use a calculator(I dare not) Still do get help out of high season for being 75/67 years of age so it helps.Cannot even use half the sites normally  as the pushing a wheelchair not so easy at times. But still better than a stink

Are we talking about the high season 'per adult' price? I make that £4.45 for Ebury Hill and £9.19 for Oswestry, so the difference is £4.74.

The extra £8.98 is for how many people? If it's per person, which I suspect isn't the case, then yes very expensive. If it's for a family of 4 or 5 then I don't really consider that expensive - actually not that expensive for a couple.   Let's face it - what can you get for £8.98 these days?   I'd have said the additional cost is actually good value for money - showers, toilet that you don't have to clean out, have had to be built, need to be cleaned and are sometimes abused???

Esther, really!!! DON'T tell them about Ebury. We don't want them to find it and they certainly don't know what they are missing. Actually even without toilets Ebury has high sewage costs. They have to pay to have the cess pits emptied and the electric costs are still there for the EHUs and reception. There is also hot water in the dish wash room.
We have been using Ebury since the 1970s when there was NO electric on site even for the wardens. Amazing how we managed then. We also ran the site as Managers from 1996 - 2001. For 3 of those years there were no facilities at all until the new reception was built---luxury !!

Sorry Pippa, yes it is a fantastic site, so peaceful & we love the huge unregimented pitches and the views over the hills are breathtaking, we're only home for 2 nights then back on friday, we were talking to the wardens this weekend about loo blocks and how we really dont want the C&CC to install any and he assured us it wont happen.

The prices were for two adults + the pitch fee in high season, Ebury is £12.45 and Oswestry is £21.93, I chose these two as comparison as they are close to each other & both C&CC sites with the only difference being a facilities block, I haven't stayed at Oswestry but we have had a drive around it & personally I think Ebury is far better with regards to pitch size, layout & location.

How much extra does it cost though to buy a caravan with really good shower & loo ?

We have an older caravan which does have a shower - but it's a pretty poor one , & anyway,  I wouldn't be happy to use it for fear of damp probs in the 'van.   The older caravns with showers are not to the standard of newer ones - but of course they don't cost a fraction of the price either.

I agree with everything you say Esther. Lets keep it for ourselves and save our money.
Our caravan is 16 years old and does have a shower but it is perfectly acceptable to have an all over wash without using the shower and be clean.

Oswestry C&CC is a franchised site if I remember correctly so are the nightly rates the same as a full facility site that belongs to the club ?

Yes the sites are graded even when they are franchised and Oswestry is one of the highest priced. However when you consider the amount of work which had to be done on the site, its not surprising.

Bit late now you've just told us all on here !

Yes of course you can keep clean by having an all over wash,  but it's not quite the same as a good shower is it ?   We often just have a wash in the caravan but it's not nearly as refreshing or relaxing as a powerful shower - especially a good long soak after a very long walk/ a day's cycling / horseridng or similar.

All some of us are saying is that we feel it's not such bad value to pay this extra money to have these facilities .   Howver if you don't feel you personally need them - fine !
