hello,
I'm new to caravaning and would like to get some experience beable to manouver my van effectively, I've had a run from My home town Sheffield to Devon, but that was all motorway and good A roads, it's the bit at the campsite I need help with
Does anyone know of any help I may be able to get in the Sheffield area??
Or am I better off finding a large empty car park and learning on my own???

many thanks in advance

  Rob

I did a Caravan Club course and it was brilliant - you won't remember everything, obviously, but it gives you the basic "moves". Well worth the money.

You'll find, on a lot of sites, that they direct you in anyway.

You could always take your rig to the nearest industrial estate on an evening.
You can spend hours on end reversing round corners etc. without too many onlookers if you get it wrong a few times.

I did a CC two day course, well worth the money.

The chap who took the course does private tuition at £30 an hour ( may stipulate a minimum time I don't know ) and lives in Doncaster.

If you want his details drop me a pm.

We did a caravan club course. Loads of hints and tips, lots of practice at hitching up, reversing around corners etc. Well worth the money and personally I don't think anyone should be allowed to tow without attending a training course.

Ummm... yes but I don't live anywhere near a course. The nearest CC to me is over 2 hours away.

Catie,

I wasn't saying that everyone had to attend a CC training course but that before a novice caravanner is allowed to take to the road they should have to attend some sort of mandatory training.

Having read one or two caravan forums I find it frightening that some people for instance buy a caravan on Monday and intend to set off for a holiday on the Friday loaded up to the gunwhales and start posting questions when obviously they haven't a clue about loading a caravan, noseweights, towcar limits and the rest. The questions should start before the van is even bought.

We take delivery of our new van in about three weeks or so and are novice caravanners but I have made it my business to know as much as I can about it before I take to the road. This doesn't mean I "know it all" and could still come a cropper but I think it is less likely.

I take this responsibility seriously as I am not only putting our lives and property at risk but also those of other road users.

Ian

Must agree, its amazing in this H&S crazy country that you can simple set of with something twice the length of your car with out any training.
All that aside I always use Street view now to see what those final turnings actually look like in those narrow country lanes.

Me too. Trying to sort the last couple of miles to Tretio in Pembrokeshire as I type. Looks like threading it through the eye of a needle either way.
