We're considering switching too after reading a letter in this months caravan club magazine, the guy is with the RAC and had a puncture whilst towing, his spare is a "space saver" wheel which he fitted, the RAC guy advised that it's not suitable for towing with but because the puncture, and therefore the problem, was no longer an issue there was nothing the RAC could do.

Saw that report too! With that attitude, anybody with RAC needs their head looked!

If you tow a caravan with a car that has a space saver wheel, ditch this and buy yourself a full size steel spare wheel with a budget tyre fitted and balanced for complete peace of mind. I've done this with my last two Vectras and my current Insignia.

The cost for doing this is little more than £100.00 and is well worth it. It means that even if you're not towing and you get a puncture, you can continue your journey at full speed rather than having to chug along at 40 or 50 mph.

I don't know why manufacturers bother with these space savers. With the Vectras they fill the spare wheel well and are only a couple of inches or so less thick. I 'spose it's a money led decision.

Vic.

We have the top cover with Greenflag and my wife and myself are also covered as 'Personal Cover', which means we are bothe covered to drive any car and even the car is covered if we are travelling in another vehicle as a passenger.  My son broke down on the way back from Asda one night and I was travelling as a passenger.  I called out Mayday and they then towed us home under my Mayday cover.

I wouldn't be without it.

Could someone please help me out here?
With mayday cover, is the actual caravan covered if it breaks then?
Swiftcover just told me that their car and caravan breakdown doesn't cover the caravan if the towcar is still ok. I have to leave my caravan behind if it breaks. I want to go elsewhere now.
So if my car is fine but my caravan develops a fault like no lights or a puncture or such like, with mayday we would get the caravan recovered?
Sorry to sound thick
Thanks

Ive just renewed. £73.00 for the middle option with extracare added. The only thing the top level offers me extra is homecare which I didnt need as my mechanc lives on my street and his garage is only round the corner. Fantastic cover and fantastic service.

i'm a mayday member too - was cheaper to join the c/c and get the middle (£62) cover than to renew with direct line breakdown,

just had wife's breakdown cover renewal from direct line £49.82, so she'll be with mayday too - for £21.50 for 12 months (it doesn't have to run out when the main car's policy does!!!)

so all in all - make the most of the savings - i've saved over £40 - thats before any other discounts / savings or even using a c/c site!!

We have found it really useful - particularly as we have 3 cars - they advised us to cover the one that the children use as we would be covered if we were in our own cars. Every time we've called them out they have been super!

I can't seem to find any info on European cover with Mayday. We are looking at Roadside & Recovery for £62 but there doesn't seem to be an option to include European travel? We only need 2 weeks cover a year for our annual summer hols to France.

Claire, if you do decide to join let me know. If I recommend you we both get a £10 M&S voucher. We took out the top level back in March. We'll take out the European cover seperately (not with CC) like we did last year.

Hi CaddyClan. Mayday is for UK only. To get Mayday in the first place, as previously stated, you have to be a member of the Caravan Club. The service is operated by Greenflag. To get the same service from Greenflag direct, ie without being a CC member, would cost you a lot more. You could then purchase European cover from them.

The cheapest (and best way), is to use Mayday for UK cover and then purchase Red Pennant Euro cover as/when required from the Caravan Club. This is what I do.

Hmmmm what to do. We currently have Green Flag Euro Plus for £121 a year, but the caravan is only recovered if it's attached to the car - and if it's the car that breaks down.

What concerns me is if the caravan develops a fault and we cannot tow it back (we have the Alko Trailer Control system - and if the red light comes on we can't tow it anywhere).

I just don't know what to do. Green Flag have always been brilliant with us. Red Pennant Euro cover is £100 for the single trip standard cover or £147 for the single trip + cover. It would be £64 for the UK Green Flag recovery plus..I know that any fault with the caravan electrics wouldn't be covered but I think we could cope with that in this country. I can't seem to get a non-member quote from Mayday but I'm thinking it would be £64 plus the £40 membership fee = £104?

Hi Claire. I have the "Full Monty"cover with Mayday. Its called "Premium" with Personal Cover. It costs £117. The two of us is covered for any car we happen to be in. We have two cars, so that averages out at £58.50 each. There are no weight/length restrictions and we get "double journey" service,( take your caravan onto your destination and return all home after holiday). For Euro cover we use the Red Pennant scheme, which costs us £265 for 122 days. This includes repatriation and medical. To get all of this you must be a Caravan club member. I have done much research on all costings/variations and this works out the best for us.
