My parents have a caravan which they have stored on a farm with a small caravan site. When they want to use it it's just towed onto the pitch by the farmer.

My husband is visually impaired and so I'm the only driver and because I only passed my test 2 years ago I would have to go through the towing test which is difficult because I only have an automatic licence. My car is through the motability scheme and so any towbar has to be fitted through the dealer but this is extortionate.

We really fancy buying an old, cheap caravan on ebay (because we have 3 children under 5 who trash stuff) and finding a site in the nottingham area (friends there and it's a good stop off on the way to see family in the south of England who we don't see at the moment because I can't drive that far) but we're struggling to find a pitch and store site which will tow the van onto the pitch for us.

My parents have always had a caravan and I have friends who work in the industry who will check the van over for me so that side of things doesn't really bother me but I'm wondering if it's a crazy idea. I take my children away a lot on my own and I hate leaving them in the tent when I go to the loo at night and long for the TV so I can have a lie in in the morning! It really doesn't bother us going to the same place over and over, we just like to get away from here.

Not a crazy idea at all, kids will enjoy it, and you might get a lie in !!

Thanks!

I suppose my worries are that we are on quite a tight budget and I don't want to take out a loan which means we're talking £500 caravans really. I'm just worried that we'll get one and it'll be a disaster! I think the budget is the thing that's bothering me the most to be honest.

If anyone knows of any suitable campsites it would really help. ideally close to a pub, bus stop and shop, have a kids play area and showers.

If your outfit is light enough you may not have to take another test to tow.

Not sure who told you that as it is incorrect. We had ours fitted by a registered company with no hassles and saved over £250 on the dealer price. It was fitted onto a Ford Mondeo for about £240.
As long as the company is registered there should be no issue with having a towbar fitted.

BTW what sort of car, i.e. make and size fo engine, do you have as then we can advise whether it is a feasible option to tow a caravan or what size caravan you can tow.

That's interesting about the tow bar. I was quoted £470 by the dealer which I thought was very steep when I'll be handing the car over after 3 years. I'll give motability a ring next week when the twins are back at the childminders and see what they say - if I can get it done for closer to £200 it'd be more reasonable.

My car is a 2010 1.9l vauxhall zafira diesel automatic. I have 4 children and ideally we'd want to transport their bikes. Van wise we don't always have my stepson so a 5 berth would be absolutely fine as he is 11 and we have pup tents or he could go in the awning.

Thanks so much for your help.

Helen

Can we assume that the 1.9L is the diesel variety which would then give you a good option on choice of caravans. Have a look in the vehilce's handbook to see what the maximum towing capability is of the vehicle as the Vauxhall website is a bit sparse with info.
Once you have bought the towbar if after three years you get another Vauxhall simply get the towbar chnaged across but not by the dealer unles you get it as a freebie for choosing a Vauxhall.

Provided the combination of the weight of the car and the MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass) or MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) on older caravans is under 3.5 tonnes your licence is fine. For your budget you are looking at early to mid 90s caravans which were very light.

Hi
We used to have a caravan which was sited on a seasonal pitch. We never towed it - the site owner collected for a few quid for us and pitched it.
At the time i was the only driver, and my little Corsa couldn't have towed at all.
It was great fun and if we were in the same situation would do it all over again.
(We only gave it up cos we moved to the area we liked it so much)
Now we do tow but manage to keep within the 3500kg limit quite easily.

Well it's all food for thought. I've emailed a local towbar fitting company who have fitted tow bars onto vehicles where I work to see how much it will be and i'll get a couple of other quotes before we make a decision. I like the idea of joining up with a camping group and doing the rally thing but had discounted towing so didn't really think it would be feasible!

Whereabouts in the British Isles are you. Just state the county i.e Worcestershire. Maybe someone can advise you about a rally.

Once established with a caravan you could join either the CC or C & CC for rallies in that area.

Try Indespention tow centres for fitting a towbar, they are a Motability approved workshop, and fitted one to my brother in laws car for towing his big mobility scooter around on a small trailer when he visits family in Lincolnshire.

Motability do ask that the towbar is left in place at the end of the 3year contract though, something I believe to do with 'making good' any holes and connections ect altered when the towbar was fitted. As B-i-L changes his Ford focus every three years on the Motabilty scheme, he too complains about the added cost of buying a new towbar everytime.

Im sorry but the only site that i know of that does a tow-on storage service is in North Wales, as far as i know Nottingham is not very well blessed with its share of tourist campsites, especially near the city centre, the main areas for sites are around the Sherwood forest and more over towards the Derbyshire peak district areas where the supply of seasonal pitches and storage seems abit more plentiful.
