Hi

We pick our new (to us!) caravan up tomorrow - I am so excited

I know I'm going to have a million questions, so please don't laugh if I'm on here tomorrow night asking stupid questions, I can feel the confusion already....

Ooh, I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight

Oh congratulations Gail!

We sold out 'first' caravan today (I admit to feeling more than a little emotional when she was towed away, out of sight *sob*....daft I know, but it was at the centre of so many wonderful family holidays.

We collect our new (to us) caravan next Friday and I can feel the excitement bubbling again. I just hope we have as many happy times with this caravan as we did with our other.

Oh, and take lots of photos before you clutter it up! :)

Have fun!

Claire

OOh, up and ready to go and get it.

We've got a 2003 Swift Speedbird 490, which was a dealer special based on a Charisma or Challenger I think.

Our old caravan didn't have mod cons like running water, never mind a water heater, so it's all going to be a bit new to us.

Thanks guys - I'll be back!

I'm seeing that your old van is a abi marauder ,we loved our first van which was a 2 berth marauder,we didn't have the water etc plumbed in and we don't with the  van we have now either. l prefer just having a couple of large volvic water bottles stored in the cupboard for when we need it ,then refilling them and having a chat to other campers on the way to the taps lol then i kind of feel like I'm still camping .lol

good luck with your new van and I'm sure you will get all the advice you need from the other more experienced members.

Congrats Big learning curve. We traded in a 1991 Compass Shadow for a 2004 Bailey, suddenly we had blown air heating, shower, hot water, heiki skylight, more lights than one could ever need, flushing toilet (no more porta potti). Heartbreaking to leave the old one but after about 15 trips away, would never go back.

Flippen heck your van sounds like luxoury compaired to mine lol I have a little blow air heater which comes out into the awning then carried into the van if we need it,having upgraded from a pee bucket (which was tastefully decorated with luminous paint so I could see it in the dark lol) to a porta potta and now a cassette toilet we thought we were posh .

Many congratulations on your new van. We have  a Charisma 555 which is superb. Have you thought of joining the swift owners club - lots of rallies and very friendly people - contact me if you think you might be interested

Hi - thanks for all the congratulations.

It is lovely - the salesman went over loads with us, and when we got it back to our storage site, we found in a drawer all the original manuals and instructions, all neatly together in a folder.

I knew I would have questions, so hope this isn't really dim - I know we have to have a battery in the circuit, but what does actually run? Will the caravan still work if there is no battery there?

Battery can supply the lighting (although you might have one or two 240volt lamps) it may also supply the cooker for the ignition spark and the heating and the fridge for the same thing - it does not supply the fridge for working on 12 volts - that only occurs when you are towing and is supplied from the car.

Other things supplied by the battery will be the water pump and the electric flush on the loo, it will also supply the power for a motor mover if you have one fitted. With a motor mover you will probably need a 110 Ah (amp/hour) battery otherwise a 90 Ah one will be sufficient, although a leisure battery is recommended there is no reason why a car battery won't work if you have one lying around.

Enjoy
