Hi,

We pick up our first van a week on Tuesday which is a 2007 Bailey Ranger. The van will come with a 6 month warranty but we are thinking of extending this for piece of mind especially in case of water ingress. Unfortunatly the previous owner didn't keep the service book up to date so we can't be sure that bailey would honour the 6 year ingress warranty, etc. Our dealer has offered us a 2 yr extended waranty for £349 but this is an up front payment in full. From hunting around the net we have found this warranty by discover:

http://www.caravaninsurance.co.uk/caravan-warranty

It seems a fair price at £14.99 a month and would also cover us for water ingress for the next 3 years, i.e until the van was 7 years old. We like the idea of it as we can pay monthly and cancel at any time with no commitment. As with all insurance we see they have their "exclusions" but wondered if anyone else has used this or could suggest a similar package from another supplier. We don't want the option of paying 2 years up front in case we decide to sell the van as these are normally not transferable and often come with no refund!

Many thanks

Darren

I would phone Bailey and ask the question. Re the water ingress bit. Before committing to this extended warranty. Worth the cost of a phone call

That should get you to the next station I suppose...

Personally I would avoid - water ingress cover, even on after market warranties will usually insist on an unbroken service history record buried somewhere within the small print.

£15 a month is £180 per year plus you'll have full service costs on top of that plus not knowing if the warranty will be honoured when you need it...

Thanks for the comments so far.

In relation to the above I did phone Bailey who were less than helpful! They said it will need a fully stamped book to claim on the warranty so I asked if I could give them the chassis number to check on their dealer system to see if it has been done. My thought was as it was one owner before if we could find out where it had been done we could have contacted the dealer, etc....their reply " sorry we don't keep records"!! So we are a bit stuck at the moment although the dealer we are buying from is trying to contact the previous owner to see if they can help by at least telling us if was done and where. We are getting the van with a full service but as the dealer isn't an "approved" bailey site it won't help especially if we can't prove the history.

On the other point their policy states the following:

Failure to service Your Caravan in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations

will not invalidate this Insurance, however; this Insurance will not cover faults

attributable to or caused by lack of routine or regular maintenance.

I phoned them about this on Friday and was told providing I can show a service history from the point we purchase it they were would be happy with this. We intend to get it serviced every year anyway so aren't too concerned about this aspect but I would want this in wiriting if we took a policy out.

Our preferred option would be to get the next 2 years covered by Bailey but at the moment it isn't looking great for that unless the dealer has any luck with the previous owner. If they can't trace the history then we are considering this once the dealers 6 months warranty expires as the OH thinks £14.99 isn't too bad...........but then again it would be great to hear if anyone else has used this company and ever claimed, which with insurance companies is always the real test!!

puzzled why you only got 6 months warranty, we got 12 with our 2007 bailey ranger from discover in Darlington, also never got the service history of van but after much pushing finally got the print outs but not in a service book, i think they should be passed on like they do with cars.

Hi, we are buying the van from a local 2nd hand dealer (The Caravan Company) and they aren't part of discover. Unfortunatly they only give a 6 month warranty with all their vans and also don't offer the extended warranties from Discover. We don't like their policy as you have to pay up front for the extra 2 years and the policy from discover works out nearly the same over 2 years but has the benefit of been able to cancel with 30 days notice.

Out of interest how did you get the service print outs? Bailey our telling us they don't have a national system so unless we can find the dealer that did them it doesn't look like we can get hold of them! I agree that it should be like cars and can't understand why Bailey don't have a national online system for their approved dealers!

None of the UK caravan manufacturers have a National online service history system , personally I dont understand why people spend thousands on a new or newish caravan and then are to tight fisted to spend the money keeping the service history up to date because come re-sale time there's no transfer of warranty . Have you considered buying at an Bailey Dealership where
there approved second hand vans carry the balance of the
6 years warranty

This line does not specifically spell out that the routine or regular maintenance applies only to that done after you have bought it.

This line has been inserted as a "get-out" of paying for expensive water ingress remedial work!

Whilst they may have said this on the phone the company will either deny it or say the person you talked to had no right to say it - ask them to include it as part of the small print on the policy and see what they say.

If you go ahead make sure you have it in writing as part of the policy

Thanks and completely agree about putting things in writing and would certainly insist on a letter to this effect saying that having no history prior to purchase won't invalidate sections!

BTW the dealer has just phoned after speaking to the previous owner and they have confirmed that they didn't get it serviced in line with baileys requirements! I really don't know why people buy a new van and then don't service it! The dealer is giving it a full service prior to our collection and will be giving us this in writing / stamped up along with their 6 month warranty.

As the van is only 4 years old, and therefore a fair investment for us, we would like the reassurance of having a warranty for at least the first 3 years!

If anyone knows of any other companies please let us know

Many Thanks

I bought a van from Discover at Delamere Forest, it came with a 12 month warranty by them. After 4 months I noticed damp in the front. They were trying to get out of actually doing the warranty work as the van was 11 years old. Apparently after they had investigated with their warranty provider (AA I think) they wouldn't pay for the work as the van was over 7 years old. After weeks of arguing and threatning legal action they eventually agreed to honour the cost of the repairs. They also managed to crack a window and a rooflight whilst they were servicing it (thats how the damp was discovered). I wouldn't buy a van from discover again and I wouldn't pay them for any warranty as I don't think its worth the paper its written on.

we got the service print outs from Discover who sold the van new in 2007,we got it last november they said they couldnt give it to me for data protection reasons,i told them it was bollocks (pardon french)and i needed it to send along with £25 to get the remaining 3 years of the body protection coating warrant which had been put on,on receipt of the history i then realised why the were reluctant to give it me as they had done quite a few little jobs on the van and some not so small ie new front storage/gas locker door which they neglected to tell me about.Dont be fobbed off by smart arse sellers its your right to demand history of van just mention solicitors, citizens advice and trading standards they will soon be in your possesion

as a 2005 Bailey pageant owner bought S/H from Discover in 2007 & no MANUFACTURERS warranty I would earnestly advise you to purchase a van with full service history & take up Bailey's warranty option for £25.It could save you a lot of heartache & a small fortune.

Bailey are no worse than any other British vans,But did suffer from stress cracks of the front & rear panels (as do many other makes of caravan)IF this happens to your van it will be replaced by Baily under their warranty. If you do not have their warranty it could cost in the region of £2k to have it done yourself

The 6 year water ingress warranty should be valid irrespective of the service history as it is either an assembly fault or substandard materials, annually servicing the van has no bearing on water ingress other than using the damp meter check to tell you that water is or isn't present in the structure of th van if say after 3 years as part of a service rooflights /vents / awningrails etc had to be removed and resealed then I could understand the manufacturers refusing to do anything if water leaked in because this hadn't been done. As for panel cracks this is a material failure caused by poor assembly regimes or unsuitable materials I think as usual it's a good get out clause for manufacturers and dealers to save money

Phil76, I totally agree with you, however if the manufacturers warranty is available it will save an awful lot of trouble in getting the repair done.without it you would in most probability have to resort to solicitor letters,& use of the sale of goods act & then with no absolute certainty of succeeding.

Does anyone have experience of claiming on the bailey 6 yr ingress warranty without a full service history then? You would like to think that Bailey would honour it especially as they don't seem to have a national database......so other than the service book how do they know? As we are buying 2nd hand we would have no way of knowing either way if our dealer hadn't made the effort to trace the previous owner. We have checked the van out as best we can (inc with a decent damp meter) and it all appears fine and is in mint condition. We have the comfort of a 6 month warranty from the dealer we are buying from but are still swaying towards some form of extension to this just in case. The discover one would suit us IF they will confirm having no service history before we owned it won't invalidate any sections of their policy. Our dealer has offered us a different one from gatewayleisure.com but this costs £249 for 1 yr and appears (from looking at their site) to have a claim limit of £1000 where as the discover one has a claim limit up to the value of the van (in our case (£8k). If anyone can recommend any others we are all ears
