is there anything to worry about?

We've taken our van onto a seasonal pitch today and set up the awning, electric etc. In our haste to get back as we'd left the kids with their nan, we're not sure whether the fridge was turned off, but my wife did the usual and left the door slightly open to avoid mould. If it was switched on, what damage am I likely to return to? Do I need to go back tomorrow to check and switch off as it's a 120 mile round trip, as otherwise it will be next weekend before we go.

My understanding of seasonal pitches is that you unhook your electric when you are not using your caravan. Perhaps if you do this in future it might stop these kind of problems.

When are you planning to go back ? If it's only till the weekend I wouldn't worry but it will be working over time trying to cool down the whole caravan. I'm sure others will have different opinions

Perhaps you could leave a set of keys with the site just in case of emergencies.

Our first try with a season pitch, but everyone elses van had left the electric connected so didn't see the need to disconnect ours.

It did cross my mind about a keyholding service but I guess there may be problems with insurance (theirs and ours) if anything ever went missing, or if people tried it on claiming things had gone missing that never existed.

I'll try ringing them in the morning, and ask them to just unplug the electric from the post which should solve it.

Good idea. Save you a long round trip.
Re Keys. Our storage yard has a full set of our keys. Including hitch lock and wheel clamp. Re insurance my argument would be. IF there was a fire (please god there isn't) They are on site and can move my van. I'm an hour away so by the time I got there my vans a crisp.

Good luck with your seasonal. Wishing you many many happy holidays

It is usual to leave keys, for insurance purposes it is no different to leaving keys with dealer for a service surely?

Any seasonal pitch should really be taking keys just in case of an emergency.

If your fridge is on with lecky connected the fridge motor will be working 24/7 which its not usually going to be doing.

Call the site & ask them to disconnect the electric for you.

For piece of mind and to save you posting "I asked the site to pull my EHU and they didn't now my fridge doesn't work" I'd take the time to do the 60 mile trip there and back - do it over a couple of day with the kids and stay the night maybe

If you want it costwise 120 miles is 3 maybe 4 gallons of fuel - about £24 - new fridge heater including fitting £80+

BTW - I'm not saying the site won't unplug for you just that at this time of year 'busy' and 'forgetting' are two things that crop up on a daily basis

We are on a seasonal pitch and always disconnect the electric cable and leave it in the front box of the van - same with the TV ariel.  They are easy to steal, impossible to identify - and it only takes a few minutes.

The site we are on  insists that the electric is disconnected and gas bottle turned off because of the risk of fire if you go home having left something turned on.

Couldn't do an overnight as have work tomorrow - was going to have a ride up on the motorbike but woke up with the mother of all migraines. Phoned site and left a message, then phoned later and they said they'd unplugged it. Hopefully they did - will find out Thursday when we go up for the Bank Holiday.

HI

Will the fridge if it is on not keep trying to cool the space and as the door is open it will require more cooling and therefore more water (condensation).  Could be that this drips onto the floor if left for a while causing more issues!

Just a theory.... don't shoot me.

Cheers

Richard

Our site is the same as they just unplug them when they mow the grass anyway

Hi Vicky, I'm glad you got through and they have unplugged it for you. I think it might possibly have overheated with the door left open. I don't think I'd leave either gas or electric on if I wasn't there to keep an eye on it.
