Being new to caravanning just wondered what type of pitch i needed. Is a grass pitch ok or do i need hard standing? We always get elec so i know about that side of things.
Whichever you prefer really...we go for hard standing in winter and grass in summer. Sometimes you need to remember hard standing can be incredibly hard...we were at Chatsworth couple of weekends ago and had to buy different awning pegs as we just couldnt get ours in the ground, it was like concrete!
I have no preference love them both!

It really is a case of personal preference. Some people prefer to pitch on gravel, personally, providing weather conditions are not dreadful, I feel more relaxed pitching on grass. Some sites do not give you a choice, in any case: they are either all grass or all hard-standing. My advice would be to give each type a go and decide which you feel happiest with.
In Summer I would prefer all grass if available, but with weight of caravan often have to have hardstanding. If putting up an awning I like to have a pitch where van is to edge of hardstanding and there is a grass area for awning.
In Winter prefer all hardstanding and use rock pegs for porch awning.
look for a pitch with no trees overhead , nothing worse than a continual drip drip drip even hours after it has stopped raining , or you get birds crapping all over the roof it sets like concrete , and in the summer when you open the roof lights you get seeds from the tree in the mesh , watch out for large grassy areas , wich could mean football games , or frizbees wacking the van , try and find a level pitch to save leveling ,
I prefer a nice level grass pitch but not when its all squelchy and wet, the hardstandings can puddle just as much so I tend to take what I'm given, its only for a short time after all.
