Hi there.OH and I have been camping for the last few years and are now thinking of taking the plunge and buying a caravan. We don't want to take out a second mortgage and just want to try out an entry level 4/5 berth van up to about £2,500-£3,000.When would be the best time to start looking for a private sale van ie.end of this season or wait till beginning of next year.

I would say now, as most of the people who have older vans now maybe upgrading to new vans, as next month the new 2012 models are released so the 2011 are heavily discounted :)

Hi Tracy7 My advice is to take your time and visit Used Caravan Sales, sit in and poke around, dont intend to buy but get the feel for different vans and believe me you will know the one you want, that done wait and buy private. If you do buy soon have you room at home for the van? or will you have to put it in storage? One way or the other you wont regret it, Welcome to the Tin-Tenters.   John

Hi Tracey,

Just done the same thing. We love camping but are partial to comfort and warmth so we upgraded from our trusty old Foling Camper and got a Caravan. No regrets so far.

Now is as good a time as any to buy. We looked at dealers to get a feel for what we wanted and decided a 5 berth with a rear dinette that converts to a bunk suited us best.

However, everything we looked at at the dealers was either tired looking or out of our budget. In the end we bought a really nice van from someone 2 miles from us (private sale). They were giving up caravanning so it came with all the essentials too!

With regard to towing check this website when you spot a caravan that you like:

http://www.whattowcar.com/basic_index.php

I doubt the Lucida is listed as it is an import - but I think it is the same as a Previa? I'm sure someone on a Toyota Forum will know the unladen weight of your car though.

Good luck with the search

Have a look at your Vin plate

It will say maximum vehicle weight (eg total weight)

and maximum train weight

So for example car maximum weight say 2000kls

Train weight 3000kls the maximum towing capicity would be 3000kls minus 2000kls which gives a maximum towing capicity of 1000kls (example only)

The best time to buy is when someone else is desperate to sell. This could be any time of the year, but on the run up to Christmas is likely to be when there are more people desperate to sell. But anyone thinking of selling up will want to be doing it pretty soon rather than have an unwanted caravan to store through the winter when it is quite possibly not going to be looked at for a few months in cold frosty weather which may do damage to it.
