Warm bedding!!! a sleeping bag in addition to a quilt works well, still need some ventiliation and if your heater works on a thermostat leave it ticking over...probably get shouted down for that one!! Also because its dark early get up and out and make the most of the daylight.
Enjoy

I hope we can use the van all the way through the year, i look forward to being able to escape if if it is just to sit the tin and drink tea!

I have another question.
Can I pour anti freeze in the toilet to prevent freeing up??
There will be no need. The heat from inside the caravan will stop it from freezing. However, make sure you drain it along with all the other water tanks etc when your break has finished. Many pipes/pumps have cracked due to frost damage.
I've just thought of something else. When on some sites they may ask you to be cautious about using too much electricity. Year before last at moreton in marsh cc site the electric kept tripping out due to everyone having their heating on full, boiling kettles etc. It was so cold that it was putting extra strain on the supply.
Warm clothes hats and gloves are a must.We found in winter that two rectangular sleeping bags one inside the other was very warm. The bags don't need to be the most expensive.
We spent a very memorable christmas in our van with the kids and dogs in the middle of wales, it was fab. We kept warm and dry, the caravan was toastie and we were so cozy. One of the dogs was a bit cold but she is whippet like so we had a coat for her but the kids were fine. Totally reccomend it, caravan all yr round! The only thing to trouble us was strong winds...cold and wet is bearable, strong awning ripping winds sent us scurrying homewrad bound in the end! x

the reply i got from thetford when i had the same idea as follows.
Thank you for your e-mail.
Any antifreeze used should be non acidic and non corrosive. Generally any non toxic anti freeze that is mono propylene glycol based should be ok. If using anti freeze please adhere to the manufacturers instructions at all times.
Please refer to your Thetford Users Manual with regards to using the toilet in the winter. Please be aware that Thetford accept no responsibility for damage caused by any anti freeze products.
Kind regards,
Thetford Customer Care.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
RV'ers in the USA and Canada use antifreeze in their holding tanks and if you look on the American RV forums you will see various recommendations as to which is the best. Not sure if you can get antifreeze specifically for toilets here but I am sure some of our European neighbours must have something similar.
Check to see where your heating pipes run as if like mine the Alde hot pipes run under the cassette and keep it warm in the winter. Last winter in the UK a few people had problems with the pipes from the flush tank freezing and my feeling is that if that is likely to happen then it is probably better to keep it drained down and flush the toilet from a bottle kept warm and containing flush fluid specifically for that purpose.
