Hi. After much deliberation we have finally ordered a new car and are ready to order a new Elddis caravan.

The sales are on at the moment and we were hoping to get a good deal on a brand new van. We've had some discussions with our local dealer but I've noticed that the same caravan is on at £1400 less in Coventry (we live in Durham)

Obviously that is a big saving so its tempting to drive down and pick one up there! Am I correct in thinking that if we had any problems with it we can take it to any Elddis approved dealer for repair under warranty?

Is it a bad idea to buy a new caravan from a dealer 3 hours away?

Any opinions welcome!

Remember that every time you have an issue, you need to drive 3 hours there and three hours back.
I would mention to the dealer that you have seen the same caravan at £1400 less and hope that they will lower theri price.
If you only got £800 knocked off, you are scoring. It is a buyers market at present and easier to negotiate prices.

I had been hoping I could take it to a repair centre locally for any work?

The local dealer is not budging a penny and they won't even throw in a couple of extras free

Have just been through the same issue with a new Lunar. I emailed Lunar on this matter and was told yes any dealer would do the warranty work, but the reality is that they probably would not. " It's not like buying a new car you know" I was told buy my local dealer. I told him what we could get the van from another dealer, and he took another £500 off, which was half the difference. Deal done. 260 mile round trip avoided.

XVI yes?

The EU law that requires any main dealer to do warranty work relates only to cars, not caravans.

Make sure that the caravan in Coventry is still available. Who are the dealers as you should be able to name them? At £1400 saving I would be very tempted.

Make no mistake if you buy from a dealership far from home and have a warranty claim your first port of call has to be you supplying dealership other caravan outlets are under no obligation to repair you warranty claim although they might depending how busy they are .
They will see to there own customers first so its far better to buy on your own doorstep

Everyone is correct. If the Coventry people claim that any Elddis dealer will do the servcing and warranty matters then make sure that your local dealer agrees to that in writing. After all, theory is one thing, practice is another. Your local dealer will look after his customers first and not those of someone else.

Then there are your Sale of Goods Act rights. They are against the seller and not your local dealer. That £1400 saving could be eaten up in travel.

Then there is the socio/economic argument....Spend your money where you earn it. It stimulates the local economy. If everyone in your area went miles away for a van would you have a local dealer?

Phil

Could you get servicing and warranty work carried out by a mobile engineer?

That said if the local guy has an empty workshop he will probably be only too pleased for the work. I bought mine in a private sale and when I needed a service the dealer I used in Canterbury (Canterbury Caravans, an Adria Agent) could not do enough for me.

I would have a look at the list of Eldiss dealers. There may be one nearer to you than Coventry who will price match [or beat]. To save £1400 I would definitely buy from Coventry and plan a couple of nights nearby to make sure all is well. Dealers often offer local sites at their expense for 'Snagging'.

Please report back after you buy.

And then be forced to travels hundreds of miles for warranty work ?? the £1400 would soon be eaten up if you had to make 3-4 trips to get warranty work carried out and all the expenses incurred with travelling

we bought an Elddis from a dealer 2 hours away and have a local approved dealership who is happy to carry out warranty work and servicing. The dealer we bought from just needs to be made aware etc and is happy to approve work.

in some circumstances other dealerships will do warranty work but there not Obliged to so and if they so no you cannot force them .
There are numerous stories on this forum and others where people have had to travel miles back to there supplying dealership for warranty repairs because a local dealership refuses to undertake the repairs because they did not supply the van new

If you check (as we did) before buying then at least you will be aware?

I bought our Lunar 128 miles away and it's going into a Lunar dealer 20 mls away for some warranty work in a few weeks. No ifs or buts just make a list of any thing that needs doing was the reply.
