we were at Brid' this weekend, very high winds sat' and sun', our little perch awning stood up the the high winds quite well for the most part but when we got back sunday evening it was in a heap at the side of the 'van, only 1 very minor tear that'll be easily repaired.
was going to take it down before we went out but idleness crept in ,won't hesitate next time.
good job my OH has already bought an awning we can use on our next trip while i repaior this one
------------- no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far

we are seasonal and was in the van over from sunday night and am still there just now, we have a seasonal awning[porch] and we didnt have any problems but 5 other awnings on the site are wrecked we are in stirling and the gusts were at 60+mph
no idea Wizzo puzzle to me also????????????
arrived at caravan today to find the extra support poles had done their job and the awning was standing as i had left it weeks before, then i spotted a hole in the roof at the front. when you stretch out a pole and then tighten the thumb screw, this thum screw had turned around so that the thub screw had gone under the canvas, the battering from the wind then rubbed a hole in the roof as big as a 10 pence.
so thats my next challenge to stop them turning when its windy????????

Could you describe where you put the extra poles. Were they upright or at an angle and if so which way. I just want the check I am placing them correctly. Thanks in advance.
we had a call wed night that our awning was flapping , so we went and the awning seems ok but 2 poles have dinted the van nothing major , thank goodness . we took it down ,saves us a job in a few weeks when we start touring again !!!!
this might seem over the top but its worth doing with seasonal pitch when you are not there, you can also see the hole in the roof were the thumb screw turned and rubbed through in the high winds, still thinking about that one??
if you can stop the poles moving where they touch the caravan you reduce the chance of collapce quite a lot and you can remove them while you are at the caravan.

That looks quite amazing, alpiner, but it seems to do the trick. Such a shame about the hole - hope you manage to get it fixed. Looks as if you might need to try and reinforce the roof at the points where the wing nuts go. Then again, I wonder if it would make any difference if you replaced the wing nuts with a different system.
Isabella have a clamp system which sre designed for fibre poles (I think it's called Isafix) - could do with something similar for steel? We are going to replace some of our wing nuts with gripons (made by Isabella), mainly because I find the wing nuts a but of a pain. We've also replaced our wing nuts on telecopic poles with these (Ventura Fixus):
These might not solve your particular problem, but there must be other things about. I use the fixus on fibre poles - I wonder if they would fit steel. They are certainly much better/easier to use than the wing nuts.
Just my ramblings which might insprire another idea!!
Wow that does look the Job. I take it all your roof poles have a storm poles. How many roof poles do you have? are they all then connected together with the diagonal braces or is it just the outer ones? Where did you get the diagonal braces from? I can't see how the pole has twisted but it may be worth putting tape around the pole where the storm pole joins it so it will grip better and avoid the ability to twist. I have done this on mine and I will let you know if any have twisted
I have been down today and all was fine! No sight of damage or any movement but decided to take it down as it will coming down soon anyway. The site has a rule of no awnings left up after the end of October. I was very impressed with the quality and strength of the NR awning but will probably look to brace it a bit more for next year.
Thanks again for eveybody for you kind advise and wisdom..
