We are going to east coast on Sunday. We live in Leeds so this is a nice journey on A64 apart from Garoby hill not sure if you know of this hill but it's a beauty and one that we always avoid because Julie says there is no way am I getting out and pushing should we not make it up, so my question is should I avoid it this time or will my set up make it ok. We have a Ford focus tdci 2007 estate and our caravan is about 950kg
What should I do this time?
Is the Ford Focus the 1.6 or 2.0 ltr diesel? There is quite a big difference in Brake Horse Power. The 1.6 diesel produces 109 BHP whereas the 2.0 diesel produces 136 BHP which is on the same scale as a Nissan X-Trail. If it's the latter then you will have no problem at all as I have towed with both. The 1.6 diesel you may struggle a bit but if it's you have to stop regarding the unexpected and required to do a hill start, this is when the 1.6 lacks the power you need.
Ford didn't do a 1.9 diesel engine on the Focus. They did the 1.6, 1.8 & 2.0 ltr. I think they eventually discontinued the 1.8 engine version because it was unreliable and noisy. The only 1.9 I know of in this class is the Vauxhall Astra and Zafira. The bodyweights of the Ford Focus's are 1391 kgs. for the 1600 and 1492 kgs. for the 2000 model. Have a look at your insurance policy as that should tell you what your engine size is but we can't answer a question when you know little about your tow car. You really need to know this as well so you can calculate a well balanced outfit.
I have the right car and the right van Jim. For me to come home from just about anywhere I can either go up Garrowby Hill or the sensible way. Turn off the A64 at York (east) on to the A1079 to Hull. Travel that road to Shiptonthorpe and then turn left at Langlands Garden Centre on to the A614 signposted to Driffield and Bridlington.
Garrowby Hill is Ok at the bottom but once you get about two thirds of the way up it gets steeper and in my experience, at that point, you always get behind a lorry struggling. That could create problems for you when towing a van. Just not worth the hassle when there is a very good road the other way.

if its a 2litre tdci focus it'll pull a train up any hill, they have the same engine as the transit van and they are good engines, BUT even towing a light caravan with my transit I would still go around if its as easy as it sounds above, just for the easier drive.
As cdwc says - use the A1079. It's also a 'quieter' road, not as much traffic to contend with. Get stuck behind a heavy truck on Garrowby and you're more than likely stuffed!!
Twurly - I agree with Tigermouse, Sutton Bank is the 'other hill'.

I came down it a couple of years ago as a passenger in someone else's car, and I certainly wouldn't like to attempt it with a caravan either up or down!

When that Lorry gets to the last third, which is one in six ,and changes down to first ,it almost stops. If you are behind it then you will stop to change down and then have to doa standing start. A1079......and, if you need a loo there is one about a mile after you leave the A64 York By pass on a layby which is nice and easy to pull into to park and then straight out. Even get a coffee there if you like....
