I'm heading for Whitby on Saturday, and the Via Michelin recommends (with caravan) along the A64. Looking at the map, isn't it Whitwell Hill on the A64 (looks interesting on streetview!) and Garrowby Hill on the A166? The A1079 looks to take me too far south for Whitby....
(I've got a 2.0L/140BHP TDI towing a 1000KG van, and - touch wood - got up and down some decent hills so far...)

Theres nothing on the A64 to worry you but an alternative route for Whitby is the A1onto A19 with with one brief steep bit after Guisborough then a lovely trip across the moors. Like someone else said...depends where you are setting off from. Avoid Garrowby Hill or Terrington Bank at all costs and caravans are definitely banned from Sutton Bank for very good reasons I might add . Enjoy,,!
I would warn her that she might need to push on the worst hills,
When you find the right spot ask her to push hard from the back and allow your Tdi to pull away quiickly, if she wants she will soon walk the 500 miles
In the mean time your local wine shop can provide a painkilling liquid..
garrowby hill isnt on the a64 is it ?? i thought it was whitwell hill , the dual carriageway bit ??
if so its a doddle , done it many times with many towcars and if there is a slow hgv crawling up plan an overtake well in advance and get in the offside lane.
whitwell hill certainly not as bad as blue bank or devils elbow ? (hole of horcum) on pickering to whitby road
Sorry I was going to go a64 them 166 and up garrowby hill. I usually avoid it but I just wanted to know if others have done that hill I have come down it without the van and seen caravans heading towards it and thought wow your brave. LOL
After frequently using Garrowby both ways with and without a load , I would say a dry day with the 2.0litre will be reasonably easy if using a low gear at the steepest point . If it is wet/damp or frosty , go around it . Front wheel drive is a distinct disadvantage when towing up this hill unless bone dry .
