Never mind the under powered car or over weight caravan - the biggest mistake here is an "experienced?" tower putting themselves between tow vehicle and trailer, something that should never be done or allowed to be done.

I'm not quite sure how an insurance company would have reacted should you have been badly injured - whether they would blame you for being there or the driver for not ensuring that you weren't there - either way the chances of compensation would have been slight to nil!

No matter what the reason never put yourself between trailer and tow vehicle (obviously with a driver at the wheel) - it is very dangerous!!!

I have pulled vans off wet grassy pitches with the 4 x 4 , but not complete outfit! I have always checked it is hitched properly myself first!

Also pulled a VW camper off a soggy pitch! It only needed to move about 6 feet, luckily he had a tow rope!

Now we carry a proper towing strop in the boot(from our off roading days!) Not had to use it yet!

Advantage of 4 wheel drives!

Trouble is a FWD car with a van on loses traction and it annoys the wardens immensly when people chew up the grass! (Rightly so!)

I think i can say the van is too big for the car,i have a grand picasso 1600diesel and pull my van to its pitch on site.Its ok for just that small run but i would never take it on the road with such a heavy van.

Absolutely right Rune - I learnt that lesson , I can tell you!

I guess I'm too nice and helpful. Or a bit foolhardy and stupid. Or all four.

You never ever push a car with a trailer on the back. Also, it sounds like that outfit needs to be taken off the road.

next time push the caravan if you feel you should help, which we all would, I'd agree wholeheartedly to not plonk yourself between van and car as the results could have been awful, glad you're ok!
