We have our van for sale and have just been offered the full asking price but the buyer is asking to come tommorrow evening with the cash (not seen van yet). We've said cash is fine but only during banking hours and buyer would have to accompany us to bank to deposit the money. They seemed very surprised about this but we dont want large amounts of money (in excess of 10k) sat in the house overnight.
What would you do? We dont think we're being too cautious.

Have you asked your bank how much you can pay into your account in cash? I think there is a limit, due to the money laundering regulations.
I don't think you are being over cautious as all the notes will have to be checked and this is a lot easier to do at the bank. I would also be wondering why they would be surprised at your suggestion, and also the fact that they have offered full asking price without even seeing the van. It is best to be very cautious as it is lot of money.

thanks, never even thought about the limit on the amount we can pay it. Apparently they dont want to make two trips (they're only an hour away) and can come during the day as they work full time. OH told them if they like and want the van that much then two trips it is!!

banking thing aside re- the amount you can bank in cash, my gut instinct is , your sale ,your rules, if the buyer wants your 'van bad enough he'll either play ball or go else-where.

He could be a dealer & all above board. People who buy & sell are used to handling large amounts of cash. I'm guessing he will find a few 'faults' & make you an offer, tempting you with a wad of cash. Its how dealers work.
But it could be something more sinister, like several blokes with a white van turning up & making a derisory offer. Its up to you, but I would be wanting to make this sale in the bright light of day.
You can pay as much folding money into your Bank as you like. The "Money Laundering" Regs merely say that the Bank has to carry out certain investigations before they fully accept your deposit to make sure that everything is above board. Just tell your bank that you are selling your caravan for £x and that the buyer is paying cash. To be fair that is probably the only way you should part with your van. Your Bank is then ready to carry out its checks. If the bank then tell you that they think it is an iffy deal just don't go ahead.

too true Tentz. It was a lady OH spoke too. She was very persistent, just sold their van to a chap getting divorced whos buying it to live in! Wants ours, just missed out on same van at a dealer local to them so saying she knows layout and van and just wants ours.
Still cant believe people are happy to turn up at 8pm (in the dark) and buy a van they've not seen!! Said they will be back in touch tommorrow, we'll see.

I would ask for ID note his name and address (youll need this anyway for the cris) I would take his money but keep the cris till it's cleared the bank next day. Maybe I'm too trusting
------------- Live every day as if it's your last but not at risk to others :-)
One would also think they would want to check the Cris reg as well as carefully checking caravan in daylight. If she is genuine & wants your specific caravan then she will come in daylight. If you don't hear from her again then I guess its no loss.
Id rather him pay straight from his account to mine. Like i did when I sold the motorhome. He tranfer the money to your sort code, leave 10 minutes then you phone your bank, is it there, yes, take the van away. personally would'nt touch the cash !!

Surely if you want to sell it and they are offering cash What is the issue? If you are concerned why not ask a few friends over for dinner?
I often pay cash for things simply because most people will accept this more willingly than cheque etc
If they are happy to buy at 8pm in the dark, then it's their choice. We normally get warned of vendors trying to sell at night to cover up issues not the other way round.
If they are offering full asking price it sounds like an ideal solution to me. You want to sell it, they want to buy it, do the deal!
Much easier to do it by bank transfer over the counter at your bank. If you are taking cash and not paying in in the buyer's presence note checkers are readily available. Pens are very cheap and UV devices are inexpensive. Worth the investment.
