While contemplating replacing my car trailer rear lenses I decided to remove the covers and measure the width of the screw holes. When I removed the covers I noticed that one of the bulbs seemed to be growing a spiky wig and when I looked inside the lens I found this:
It doesn't look like a lot (this was from BOTH lenses) and the lights still shone through but I suppose it could of messed with the towing electrics in the future.
Here they are all moss free :)

Put them in the dishwasher, if swmbo allows, will clean them up really well.
After that check the rubber seals between the lens and body as water is getting into the lens, gets to be like a warm damp greenhouse in side the lens.
Whilst you have the lenses off clean up the bulb an earth contacts as an earth fault throws all sorts of funny light combinations.

I think my dishwasher would get a bit upset If I stuck a couple of lenses up her lol
I'm still considering changing the lights for LED but I've cleaned all the contacts now so that will do until they are replaced ;)

Didn't bother with the dishwasher, used a tooth brush, you are correct about letting in water. I am treating damp in the toilet cubicle and one of the access points was the screws that hold the light cluster to the back end of the caravan. The other area was where the roof panel, the awning rail and the back panel meet. Had to change a couple of bulbs, very difficult to remove, I had to use pliers to turn them to get them out.
I had something similar a few years ago,
after cleaning the lenses I carefully drilled a small hole at the bottom, this let any moisture drain out and it is still working fine.
