If you had mentioned the reason for the question in the first place you may have got different answers,not many people will have seen the letter because like myself they stopped paying for the waste of paper a long time ago and most of the replies agree.

Thanks for your good wishes Andy. My recovery is complete and as long as I don't spend prolonged periods barbecuing myself in the sun, it will stay that way.

To detail the content of the letter would have been too long winded. If the reader of my posting had seen the letter, then they would have known what I was referring to and if they hadn't, then an unrelated answer was surplus to requirement.

getting back on topic. i read this and just sat there laughing as it seemed a bit OTT, but actually maybe she has a point. I think she was being entirely serious.

I have only dont this once...it was when we last went to Fforest Fields, the sun/shaded areas was openly explained to us, but we needed shade to let the kids have somewhere to play out of the sun, so had asked for it as we knew it was to be hot whilst there.



for those that havent seen it, the writer was suggesting that site owners advise their guests of the likelyhood of sun on their pitch so that you can make a preference for sun or shade at differnt times of the day or throughout.

by the way, i only got a subscription as it cost nothing with tesco clubcard vouchers! and i do agree it is riddled with mistakes. Which is not good if they cant even spool check the editorial at the beginning.

hadnt realised that people sell them on ebay though...mine just go in the recycling!

LOL LOVE IT!

 I bought the mag this month cos it has a friend mentioned in it. I saw the letter  and thought at the time 'nosey bugger what's it got to do with her what other people want.'

I have a very old subscription which costs me £7.95 for three issues.

I'm happy with this but if it goes up anymore, I might consider cancelling it.

All of you are quite right about it being riddled with spelling errors and inaccuracies. It has always been like this except for a brief period when Alex (a lady and I can't remember her surname) was in charge.

The problem is that the magazine doesn't seem to employ proof readers - specially trained people who can spell and understand grammar and are geographically knowleageable. Since the advent of desktop publishing, production teams have come to rely upon spellcheck to keep them out of trouble, but alas this is not the whole answer.

I get the impression that the letter is serious and I am inclined to agree with most of the content. We spent a week in the shade this summer when other pitches were bathed in sunshine. Having a sunny pitch may not be important to some people but it is to us. Most sites are aware of the location of shaded piches and are happy to advise accordingly, but only if you ask the question.

Anybody who finds this sensible idea odd has presumably never gone caravanning in southern France & Spain in summer.

If you find yourself down that way, you select your pitch, compass in hand taking in positions of trees to get sun in the morning to sit out & have your brekkie with shade midday onwards & hopefully sun again in late evening.

There is a tipping point at around 23-25degC(imho)above which a shady pitch is better than a sunny pitch.

When we booked our site in France last year, we were asked if we would like our pitch in sun, part sun, or shade.

I think the letter writer has a point so that people like herself and the OP can have an informed choice of pitch!

We tend to choose a part shaded pitch - i.e. shaded at the height of the day but having morning and evening sun - to keep the caravan cool.

I find it odd that some sites, seemingly, don't bother to tell you or ask you which you prefer, we always get asked

I suppose if more campsites had a campsite map on their websites with the compass in the corner then folk could work it out for themselves.  Never found it to be a problem in this country - but then Im the one usually looking for the afternoon sun on my pitch so I go on google earth and work it out from there - I do that for foreign sites.  I did think the letter a bit odd and did consider it might be a wind up
