I've booked from Friday til Monday at sandy bay but the weather is goin to change drastically and I don't know if we should still go! We will be travelling from Durham so its not that far away but I'm worried about the gales we have been forecast. Would like to know if any if you guys would take the chance or just not bother going.
It's very easy for us to say either go for it or don't bother and cancel but it all depends on the actual weather when your going to travel (obviously) and the expected weather for the return. Also you would need to think about the route you would take as to the exposure to any side winds in exposed positions. The stability of your unit and confidence when towing are also things to consider.
I've towed in strong winds before but thankfully my Discovery and twin axle caravan proved to be an excellent combination in these difficult conditions.
The final decision comes down to you really but I would add that there is not point going if you'll be worrying all weekend how and if you'll gat back home if things do turn nasty.
Same predicament here. We are travelling from York to Berwick Upon Tweed, which is quite a journey if the weather is bad. Will wait until a little nearer the time in the hope that the weathermen have got it all a bit wrong. Seemed quite windy today so with a bit of luck it will have blown itself out by the time we travel.
Cheers guys. Kingwolf we tow with a 130 diesel mondeo and have a Bailey ranger. The last time we were out it was no bother towing but guess I'm just worried about the wind. We will be on the A1 for most of the journey which is quite open. Guess we just have to wait and see if its really that bad to cancel.
sandybay, the site is great but the toilels are rubbish.the weather.if the wind is over25mph its very poor to tow over 29pmh its a no go hope this helps you
Only booked it coz it was cheap and close to home. Was sick of having the caravan sat in storage, ain't been away since August and was getting quite grumpy LOL
It really is a difficult decision to make. We cancelled an easter break a couple of years due to weather forecasts of snow. As the heating in the van was broken we didn't want to take the risk so cancelled. As luck would have it the weatherman actually got it spot on and we were glad we didn't do. On the other hand we were at a Land Rover show last year over the August bank holiday weekend and the wind was severe all weekend. We hardly slept a wink as the caravan was rocking for all the wrong reasons and we were petrified the awning would go at anytime. The day we arrived is was so calm and peaceful yet bam!!!! before we knew it it was blowing a gale.
We've booked to go away at the end of the month but will cancel if necessary. Personally I don't want to be away on holiday and not be able to relax due to worry.
If the winds are high can you stay off the motorway and use more sheltered A roads? That's what we do if we can ... we have several local sites we can use alternative routes to get to if the weather is rough.

I'm in the same situation, we're booked in at Doe Park to meet friends who are travelling from Barnsley, hope it's not blowing as much as it is today, I've already cancelled twice due to windy weather.

Have you been to the war weekend before? I was thinking of going for a day trip but couldn't find very much info on the Internet about it.
We were at Sandy Bay last weekend, the toilets were "portakabin" type but were clean enough inside (at least when I was there anyway) and the shower was red hot. Been in a lot worse......
