Could do with a bit of advice regarding the electrics on our 1989 Abbey Somerset...

Just got back from 3 night stay in North Wales and while there we had a problem with the electrics. The water pump wouldnt work, toilet flush wouldnt work and and the electric sockets on one side of the van (door side) wouldnt work, which also meant the fridge (which isnt the original) wouldnt work either. The sockets for the tv/freeview and the socket postioned just below the right hand side sofa did still work. Was tempted to pack up and leave but we muddled on and in the end had a great few days away despite our caravan problems. Im not very good with electrics but i did check the fuses which are situated on the control box thing next to the wardrobe door and everything looked fine. One other thing is, that the normal lights in the caravan were kind of intermittent and if you tried the flush on toilet or water pump, everything apart from tv socket would shut down. I'd then have to pull the mains lead out from the ehu and plug it back in to get the lights back on. Oh and one more thing. We have 2 spotlights above the sofas, one on each side. When we went to bed and i turned the one spot light we were using off, while leaving the tv plugged in and on standby, all the lights on the main electric control by the wardrobe that indicate wether battery needs charging etc would all start flashing like mad. Only turning the tv off at the plug would stop ALL of them flashing.

As you can tell im hopeless when it comes to electrics, and its our last time away in our caravan this year so ive got plenty of time to get the problem sorted but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

im hopeless when it comes to electrics

I think that the answer is to take to a local dealer or use this list to find a mobile engineer near to you who can pop out and give the van the once over.

As for the 12 volt side, the cause was probably your leisure battery was getting flat because of the fault on the 240 volt side stopping the charger from working.

As for the 240 volt side, it sounds to me like a loose wire somewhere. Possibly at the consumer unit, but possibly if it has a few spurs from one of the sockets it could be in one of the sockets.

Even if you are hopeless at electrics, it is worth taking the cover off the consumer unit and checking the terminals are all tight and none of the wires have pulled out, then doing the same on the sockets if you don't find anything.

If you do find anything pulled out and you are not 100% certain about where it came from then do not take a guess at it, seek advise. Also do not remove any of the covers unless the EHU is disconnected.

1st thing is to check that your EHU cable has no loose wires,& if you have a test meter set it on OHMS or continuity & check the EHU cable has no breaks in it.

Check your battery is fully charged (12.7v DC) or remove it & fully charge it with a car charger

Cheers for the replies.

Davecoaches - That actually makes sense. Now wondering if its a loose wire on the water pump cos there is evidence that there was some previous repair work done and if there is a loose wire on it, im guessing that it would also explain why the toilet flush didnt work either and knocked out the fridge etc when we tried to use it.

Thanks again.
