Hi Folks, I'm hoping someone can help, my sister in law has just bought a really nice 1994 Bailey Auvergne Scorpio from someone who had it on a seasonal pitch. There are no damp issues and everything works as it should but for some strange reason the former owner took off the towing electrics and just left one socket to plug a tow car into ???? has anyone got a rough idea how much it will cost to have the electrics replaced and also does anyone know the MPTLM ??? all she knows is the MIRO is 854kg.
many thanks
bill

Do you mean it still has the black 12n plug that works the road lights but the grey 12s socket is missing? If this is the case the caravan can still be towed on the road. Its possible the grey cable has just been cut off & the charger has been left in place.
You haven't really made clear just what is missing but commercial rates are about £50p/hr + parts. If empty weight is 845kg your mptlm should be about a tonne.

If the van has not got the makers weight data plate, which includes its MPTLM, then its not legally towable on the road.
As I understand it. If it was sold, even privately, as a caravan for on public road use then that transaction would also have been illegal, as it would not be deemed road legal as said above without the makers loading plate.
The seller has a duty to ensure its road legal unless sold only for non road use.
Hiya Guys, I apologise for being a bit vague but as far as i can find out by phone the black cable has been shortend to almost nothing and the grey has gone completely so they both need replacing, The weighting plate is still there but only the MIRO is readable but i have read it on here somewhere that you can have the werighting plate re done if there is a legitimate reason for it and i guess this is a good reason , Thanks for your replies .
cheers Bill

Assuming it is just the cables that need replacing, a mobile caravan service person could do that in an hour but if 'van has been standing for a few yrs the brake drums need to come off as well so I would suggest your sis gets a quote for a chassis service as well. If the tyres are yrs old they should be replaced as well or risk a blowout if the intention is to tow a distance at motorway speeds.

We bought our caravan from a dealer in April. We haven't seen a makers weight data plate - are we illegal? Where could it be? Its not by the door where I've seen it on other caravans.

As I understand the current law yes it is illegal if it has not got a plate giving at least the maximum mass [MPTLM]
and maximum loading capability for each axle the trailer has.
Without this you cant know what load you can take and VOSA cant check it is legally loaded on a weighbridge.
Its not illegal if the makers weight plate is unreadable or missing. Theres very little regulation of caravans & trailers in this country. No mot's, no compulsory registration. All that is required is that 'van is safe, brakes/tyres ok & that lights & reflectors are in correct positions.
I stand corrected ; however I struggle to understand how VOSA can check the loading of the trailer, other than the tyres, is within the trailer's designed capability.
Hiya guys, Thanks for your input. My sis in law came home today (not with the tourer ). she has found out that the electric cables have'nt been cut rather that on this model you have a cable that you plug into fixed sockets on the 'A' frame and then into the sockets on the car !!!no problem with that. secondly although it has been used as a seasonal van it is removed every oct to a starage site. as far as i can dedtermine it is !00% road worthy ie tyres and chassiss are all ok although i have told her she should still have it serviced before moving it closer to home. It looks as if she has got a good clean van for next to nothing because the owner says she is too old to carry with it on now her husband has passed away (the tourer i mean). plus she has given them all the accessories as well. Happy touring
atb Bill.
