Hi, we have ordered a new cover for our van and was just wondering what you do to protect the flue and aerial (ours is the old style saucer type). We can remove the spike but the specific sponges are very expensive.
Thanks

------------- Are you sure you've read the instructions?
i was going to cover for the first time this year, after removing the tip i thought of covering the aerial and flue with a couple of upturned buckets or the like.

once the cover is on they can not move far due to the weight of the cover pulling down on them.do not think a mixing bowl will be deep enough as you need to be touching the roof with the bucket otherwise you are putting pressure on your fittings,ie.flue/aerial.

------------- If you're not on a fell your wasting your feet and for 2014 it's.......Feb Castleton Mar North Yors Moors; Apr Sutton on Sea; May Thirsk; Jun Clapham/Riverside (Lakes); July Wharfedale; August Crakehall; Sept Knaresborough; Oct Wirral Park/Clitheroe
Cheaper options can cost more in the long run......Micheal how do you prevent the bucket scratching the roof if the cover moves in the wnd?

Hi when I put my van into winter mode , I use a football with a hole big enough for the flue , slip on to flue put on cover on van it wont move cheers Mick.
We've just fitted our Protec cover to our Bailey Senator Arizona last night. It will be on now until the February Half Term next year. We use our 'van for outings during school holidays and put the cover on at all other times throughout the year. This is our 4th winter with the cover on.
The first winter we used the 'van the sharp ends of the metal jointing strip at the front of the roof rubbed small holes on both side of cover. Cary patched the cover with pieces from the large piece of spare fabric that came with the cover. I subsequently gently rounded the ends of the strip with a file.
I now cover the Status TV aerial edges, jointing strips, front marker lights, door hold-open catch and gas fire chimney with pieces of foam pipe insulation secured with loops of elastic and silver duct tape. The tape stays secure but pulls off without damaging the painted/plastic panels. I, also, unscrew the top from the chimney before covering it. I keep the pieces of pipe foam and re-use them each time I use the cover.
This winter for the first time I have stuck some pieces of pipe foam on the roof, near the TV aerial, so that the rainwater runs off as it tended to pool on the cover there.
The instructions on our Protec cover say that it can be put on when the 'van is wet because it's breathable. I do, however, try to get a day when it's dry. We just managed it last night a dry day followed by a rainy night.
It was slightly damp after an earlier shower but its on now and looks much more of a fit than the cheap off the shelf item we last tried. With the wife's help it took about 20 minutes ( I had already covered bits that needed covering).
