Which is better - the new cheaper lightweight awnings or the traditional style?
I have shoulder problems and plan to use the caravan regularly on my own with my 3 little girls so I need to be able to put it up on my own. The caravan came with a bradcot awning but the poles have seen better days so will need replacing so the decision is between replacing the poles with lightweight ones for the existing awning or buying a new one of the cheaper lightweight type.
Much depends on your needs and requirements. How large does it need to be?, will you be using for short trips and need something to put up quickly? How sturdy does it need to be, e.g. in high winds. If you know what your want in detail it is easy to compare pros and cons of the different styles.

That depends on how you measure "better". Traditional awnings are generally more durable but often hard work to erect and a bit of a nightmare single handed. Also really need to be taken down dry as it get be difficult to dry it at home.
Lightweights on the other hand are very easy to erect single handed. They are also surprisingly sturdy. We have left a sunncamp 260 up for a summer season before now without a problem.
We always use a lightweight and in fact we have just sold our canvas porch awning.
The cost of a lightweight is also a fraction of the cost of a traditional.
I caravan on my own and use a full awning in good weather and for long stays. No real problem putting it up, just take your time and be methodical about it. Don't try to do it in a strong wind! I can normally get my 1050cm Bradcot up in two hours and fully pegged plus table chairs etc all in place. My winter porch awning takes nearly as long but will stand gale force winds and snow as it has an awful lot of steel poles and pegging points. The lightweight I can put up in less than 20 mins and it dries over the linen line when I get home. Downside is I don't trust it in bad weather (had a pole brake last winter when I left it up longer than I should in increasing wind). Ideally I would have four awnings to cover different uses and weather (anyone want to donate an Isabella All in One 420 ?)

We had a full awning with our van but it's heavy (steel poles) and a bit too much of a faff. There's only 2 of us plus a dog so we want a large porch.
We've had a good look around and decided to go for a traditional style with alloy or fibre poles. They're only a few kg's heavier that the lightweight ones. I like the fact they're more stable and more homely, after owning a nylon tent for some years I know how condensation can be a problem too. I'm hoping to pick up a 2nd hand one.

We have used a starcamp 390 lightweight and I must say I was surprisedthat it stood up to 70 mph winds on an exposed field near brighton in june the only damage was that four of the plastic rings that held the guy ropes broke but were easy to replace with keyrings or just tied the guy to the loop on the awning
we have a dorema escada awning and the first time we put it up, it took us 4 hrs and now we just leave the doors in, is heavy and have to put in middle of van to balance it out
We've just bought an outdoor revolution evolution http://www.caravanstuff4u.co.uk/evolution_450.html we bought the 'seconds' one on ebay. It's got a very, very slight colour run hardly noticeable. Stood up to high winds on Sunday night in north Devon. It's supposed to be easy to erect, but we found it a bit of a struggle but to be honest I think with practice it will be easier.
we bought a lightweight awning and it was absolute rubbish, got blown down twice and poles slit. we now have a Quest elite with alloy poles which we can put up in 5 mins, dead easy (porch) but i bet the full size one is just as easy and i have arthritic and back problems, depends on how much you want to spend. We use a full awning for stays of a week or more - always hoping we can zip out all panels, cos that means good weather. Shorter stays we have a porch. Its good for stashing wet things ans shoes in, but you wouldn't want to sit in it for pleasure - its like being in a big plastic bag!
