I would like to paint the inside of my caravan, as it looks a bit jaded.
Pondered all the different methods discussed in other threads, and decided that silk emulsion would be the thing. Bought some matchpots from the B&Q colours range and test painted small patch and it covers very well and needs two coats.
However I wondered if now was the right time to paint, as some ppl have said that the damp in the air at this time of the year might make the paint dry more slowly, or dry unevenly.
Should I leave it until the spring? I can't see the dampness in the air being any different from what it is at this time of year! I intend to switch on a little oil filled radiator in there to assist the drying. Will this be ok?
Thanks for any replies. :)

Emulsion is water based so it's just a matter of the water drying out really so it would obviously dry quicker in a warmer environment. You need to rub down the first coat (very lightly) for the second coat to bond and this is where the main concern is that the first coat is left for about 48 hours in order for the paint to completely harden. If the first coat isn't rubbed down you will be probably left with a rough finish. Emulsion is different to oil based gloss as the properties are quite different in the fact that gloss is designed specially for wood. Emulsion is manufactured more for rough texured finishes such as walls and paintable wallpapers so don't be surprised if you have have to apply a third coat of emulsion for a better finish.

Thanks for the advice, Tango. I'm apinting on a very peculiar sort of wallboard, with an extremely thin veneer of some sort on the top face. I recently took a piece off where I did a repair, and used that for a test piece.
Although I know a gloss paint would be better, the smell and associated fumes make me feel really ill. Can't imagine using it in such a small space as my diddy caravan.
Do they still do that 'everywhere' paint at B&Q - I used to use that on everything... I think it was acrylic/water based?

I wouldn't actually use a gloss. I would go for a silk emulsion. It may be difficult to dry in the corners etc if the air is damp - the best way in this case is to get an airflow through the van. Heat may actually make matters worse by creating condensation.

I painted the inside of my caravan (walls and ceiling) using Dulux silk emulsion - I did 3 thin coats and it covered very well. There is an interior piccie in my gallery.

We painted vinyl wallpaper once with emulsion and although it covered it came off with any tiny scrape. We were advised to use kitchen and bathroom paint or add PVA to standard paint to give it better adhesion.

Cor, HEJ - that looks lovely and is similar to what I want to achieve.
I was thinking of using silk emulsion with rollers or paint pads (plus the odd bit of paintbrushing). Did it dry ok - and what time of the year did you paint?
Thanks to all for the replies! All very good points to bear in mind.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the reply. I was thinking of going down the kitchen and bathroom type or 'everywhere' emulsion, but where would I get the one you mention from?

Hi Danny, yes, I did do it in the end, with Dulux kitchen and bathroom paint. 2 layers and it looks lovely BUT it does chip quite easily.. It will do for now, but before I repaint it next time, I will use a primer!
I had used a bit of primer down one end (where there had previously been a water stain) and the difference in adhesion is amazing... so yes, looks lovely, but use a primer.

Not sure myself, Will. The stuff I used came in a spray can (not recommended!) but it did the trick with the water stain. I couldn't have used it all over the van though, too much of a spray - I would have needed a fair few cans as well.
I would think a universal undercoat would work ok though. You could always phone wickes and see if anyone has any information.
I did rub the walls down first with sandpaper, but it was still too smooth a surface for the paint to grab properly. I think if you rub down, then use the undercoat, then rub down, then a couple of coats of paint, it should work.
Do you have some small part of the surface that you can try a test on, somewhere out of sight?
