Has anyone removed the top bunk from a van with a side dinette layout? We wouldnt ever use the bed and thought it would save a considerable amount of weight. However we wonder would the remaining bed cushions on the bottom bed (made out of the side dinette) then not be a snug fit with the gap the folded bunk will have left?

Hi, yes I've done just that on my Burstner and the bottom cushions have the gap. We manage okay as we only use it as a dinette. Suppose the gap could be filled with foam cut to fit.

Ihave also done it on my Challenger 530. I purchased a piece of foam to fit the gap which my wife covered with fabric. She has restless legs and I snore apparently so she sleeps at the front with the dog and I get the dinette, just far enough away. When the bunk was fitted it was to small, OK for kids, but now I have removed it the improvement is great.

Yes I have removed the top bunk on our ranger it was straight forward there is a bit of a gap around the cushions but it hasn't been a problem. It also saves about 12 kg on the mtplm

We removed ours on our Sterling Emerald. The whole thing, the metal bits were really heavy.

There was no gap as we inserted the filler piece that was supplied with the van. You should have a piece to put in when you erect the bunk anyway, as otherwise the bottom bed cushions would have a gap all along the wall edge.

Jenifer, do you mean you used the top bunk mattress when you say the filler piece?

Yes we removed 2 bunks from ours, the upper one in the middle and the upper one at the back. We covered pieces of foam to ensure the lower cushions fit. It works well as we don't tow our van so the balance isn't affected.

I am sorry that your 3rd van hasn't worked out. It must be so frustrating for you. Good luck with your search.

thanks everyone.

Askill, I think we're jinxed, although if the 1st van hadnt have been damp we'd have still had it now.

Answered on your other thread!  We did this successfully, and you should get a filler piece from the dealer that you would use if the top bunk was folded out for use..  Otherwise its easy enough to get foam pieces to fit.  We got the dealer to remove the bunk, and tidy the holes left,  they didnt bat an eyelid and had obviously done it before.

Regarding what you said about the front double, I would take your son to the van if its possible and actually make the bed up and lie on it, just to make absolutely sure you can do what you want to when your daughter holidays with you as well.

This layout also gives you the advantage of a large kitchen area and a great bathroom, opening up the world of CLs and CSs in comfort!

No.

We were supplied with a 3 piece folding upper bunk mattress, plus a long thin 3 piece folding piece to slot into the space at the wall side of the lower bed to fill the space normally taken by the stowed upper bunk.

When the upper bunk is erected there would otherwise be a gap left at the wall side of the lower bed mattress.

This was only covered in plain fabric, so didn't match the cushions, but we were not bothered by that.

am I having a mad 5 mins but just thought if both bunks are used as some people with this layout must do then surely the bottom bed has the gap til the bunk is put back into place??

Anniemac, the big bathroom is a big draw for our 12 yr old D, she loved it and and it gives us all plenty of space to get changed. Also with our sons Aspergers we'd really struggle to get him into the campsite showers so the side dinette layout would work on that front too. We had thought about how we could use CS and CL sites as well as we dont need playgrounds etc now the kids are older.

Going to look at another Pegasus 514 on Saturday and will really spend our time in it and then make a decision.

Yes, exactly!

As I detailed above.

The infill piece was supplied with our van, but it sounds like others have had to make their own.

Excellent suggestion! Then you would all have a much clearer idea about what this plan would mean in practice
