Hi - we're looking to plan a tour of Scotland next year and especially want to visit the Isle of Skye and other north / north west locations. We have a twin axle Bailey Senator and have been told it might be too big for the roads up there. Does anyone have any experience of towing in the area, or tips they can share? Thanks.

I have towed all the way up the West Coast from Ullapool to Thurso via Durness in one day with no issues with a single axle 7"6 Bailey Pageant so a twin should present no problems .
Most roads on the Isle of Skye are also Ok for towing

On our trip to Scotland in September we found road width varied a lot and on some two way roads it was quite tight even on A roads. Perhaps not so bad if you are used to driving on those roads but as a visitor it was not comfortable at times, especially in bad weather. There can also be vast differences in width within a few miles. It was often easier to drive on single track roads!!!
How lovely,Isle of Skye is beautiful.Beautiful view from Armdale looking over to the Ardnamrchaan area,Knoydart etc, stunning.
Would love to tour Scotland Islands and hope to in the year 2013,when perhaps petrol prices are lower!lol and will have paid off a small loan we had to purchase a suitable car to pull our caravan.
We toured round West Scotland including Skye this Easter and had no problem towing our large single axle. However, the condition of most of the roads was very poor and we ended up with damage to our van as a result of pot holes. There were so many they were impossible to avoid!
Hopefully they have been fixed by now. Last winter's temperatures damaged roads all over the UK but it is certainly worth thinking about if you are planning a trip early in the season.
Hi Greylegs, Welcome to the forum, quite some time now since I was at Sky, if I remember rightly there is a pretty steep incline after you leave Luib, if you go to Google maps follow the road till you come to a sharp right hand bend, and go on the street view you will see a good view of the incline, have not hauled a van up there, (had to change down a gear or so), hopefully some of the other members have and can give you more information regarding hauling the van there. You will love Sky.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
All our roads are used be artics so you will have no problems. Yes the A82 can be narrow in parts and it does have some tight bends. Just read the road and you will be fine. We have towed all over Scotland with no problems.
I recommend Kinloch Camp site in Dunvegan North west coast of Syke. Fab site, fab views 2 mins walk into the village and very reasonably priced. Another site that you could perhaps use as a stop over on the way up is Invercoe. Again fantastic site especially if you ask for one of the water side pitches. I hope you have a fantastic holiday in our beautiful country.
