Apparently quite a few non pickup Jap import 4x4s have been registered by DVLA as a 'light utility vehicle' rather than an 'estate'. This means they AREN'T compliant with the new 2012 London Low Emissions Zone requirements and as such will cost you £200 to drive into London unless you get DVLA to correct the body type.
The problem seems to be prevalent with Hilux Surfs, but my old Isuzu Mu had been misregistered by DVLA as well-check K543CBO to see it (only just realised-luckily I don't own it anymore).
If you've got a Jap import 4x4, check your logbook or check it here or you could get an unexpected nasty bill.https://lowemissionzone.tfl.gov.uk/b...s?referrer=lez https://lowemissionzone.tfl.gov.uk/b...s?referrer=lez

Hi locovan, I was under the impression that the Japanese had tighter emission controls than here in Britain, so it comes as a surprise that their car don’t meet the requirements, with the change of classification, could it be DVLA’s way of finding extra revenue, if so it is a very sneaky way to do it, pity the poor bloke that turns up to tax his vehicle only to find that he has to pay the extra £200. Very useful and helpful bit of information, thanks for that.

It's not the RFT that is £200 more, the £200 is the daily charge for driving inside the London Low Emission Zone in certain types of vehicle, if your vehicle doesn't comply.
Cars are not included in the scheme, but if your vehicle is not registered as a car, and doesn't comply, you will get charged.

It's not that they won't meet the requirements, it's how they were classified when registered in this country.
Many jap imports are classed as 4x4 utility vehicles and their UK counterparts are classed as estates.
You might be able to change the classification through the DVLA but you'd probably have to get relevant documents from the manufacturer first.
the lez is the thing that is going to catch alot of folk out , we wont be able to take any of our service vans inside the m25 , i was led to belive it was anything over 1.205 tonne , and wasnt regestered before 2002, so bascly shafts anyone with a charge or you have a partuclate filter fitted , on a 2.8td van , thats 2k ,
I wish everyone would check as I cant believe that at this late stage people havent.
The Fun in January will start although as you are only going to get a letter first time and not a fine maybe it is safe to see what the DVL have on us and what ends up on the mat

DVLA changed my HiLux Surf to an estate no problem but either way I have no intention of going anywhere near London at any time!
That's the spirit.. boycott London!
With all the beautiful places in thsi wonderful country who needs to immerse themselves in one huge smog cloud eh.. Sure they'd be cutting the congestion/omissions tax when the tourism pounds start drying up!
