  • i purchased a swift challenger sr 2011 model in march of this year.
    the van really looks fantastic.
unfortunately on the last week in october i found damp on the front window sill, beneath the main window.
this damp was around 10 inches long by 2 inches wide.
mold spores were also growing from this panel.
i returned the van to my dealer in the west country on novemeber 4th.
i was told a repair would take till december.
i was not happy but what can you do.
swift contacted me weekly and left messages stating the repair would be expedited.
i was aghast this monday when swift phoned to state that the van would be returning to swift in april for a repair.
the possibility was that a brand new van would be off the road for 6 months!
phone calls followed phone calls, the dealer informed me that my dealership had not been trained in repair of such a new model!!!!
they had been requesting training but had not yet recieved this training,
so the next step was a roaming engineer would my visit my dealership to facilitate this repair.
this was supposed to be this week, then it was changed to next week.
my van has currently been with the dealership for 6 weeks, and is probably getting wetter by the week.
wednesday i contacted the owner of the dealership who has made more progress on my issue in 24 hours than anyone at swift has in the last 6 weeks.
my van is now being collected this week and is returning to swift for a repair in the new year.
i have been informed by my dealership i can expect a return by the middle of january.
a total of possibly 10 weeks off the road.
i have also had to cancel my nov, dec holidays which i had planned.

the ost dissapointing issue is the time taken to repair my van.
also that damp is evident in such a new model.
also swift customer services who thought it ok for a wait of six Months.

i have recieved an apology on the swifttalk website from a director.
but the standard of customer services is extremely poor.
how would have i fared if the van was 2 or 3 years old?

there is also another person who is experiencing damp in this new swift model, you can view the topic on the swiftalk website

I'm sorry to hear of your experiences with swift but not altogether surprised . We had a new sprite quattro off them & found 40% damp when it was just 9 months old ! Swift customer service was awful emails & phone calls went unanswered . Fortunately the dealer we bought from ( now defunct Discover at Delamere) were more helpful . They supplied us with another model of caravan . It's unlikely i would have another Swift again mainly due to the poor customer service experience . Unfortunately 10 weeks off the road is pretty average for major repairs . At least your van is going back to the factory for repair so you would expect it to have a better repair than the dealer could manage ? I know of several people with damp challengers, good job they have a 5year water ingress warranty eh ? I hope you get yours sorted to your satisfaction, it's a lot of money to spend on something you might not be happy with otherwise !

They now have a 10 year damp warranty.  It must be awful discovering damp and it seems to be mainly british caravans that have this problem.  At least one thing with swift is that they are the only manufacturer that can be bothered to have its own forum.

I think you are misleading everyone who reads this statement.  The issue was escalated by Andy Spacey with his fellow directors as a result of your post on the swift talk forum and this is why the van is being collected this week.

The original response from the person who dealt with the issue at customer services was appalling, but the response from having a manufacturer forum has been better.

Either way you do not expect damp on such a new caravan and as per Swift it is a common problem that they are trying to resolve.

Poor design and very bad workmanship and why should you have to go through all these arguments when things like this happen with a brand new van, they should be made to give you a new van or your money back straight away then mabe they would build them right first time.Ian

if i had damp in a new van i think i would try everything possible to get another van as replacement i would never be at ease again wondering if repair had done the job if they were not skilled enough to make it right first time what chances the repair would be up to scratch

Just the caravan club satisfaction survey of a few years ago and the fact very few owners of german vans ever seem to mention damp problems on forums.  Even allowing for fewer owners of german vans there is hardly ever any mention of damp problems.

I have heard theories that this may not be just down to better QA during manufacture but the design of the awning rail.

I have never read any complaints about damp with new foreign caravans on any forum but undoubtedly there perhaps must be some.

Speaking to Dutch caravanners, yes they do have problems with damp in German caravans. Certainly if you are considering a Hobby a few yrs old it is well known that you need to check for floor rot in the corners.

Damp only effects a tiny amount of both UK & German built caravans. Current UK built caravans have a different construction on the edges now more like current German built caravans & they also give long water ingress warranties.

The main complaint appears to be the poor service offered to those whose new caravans do leak & one can understand their anger but it would be more difficult still if a German built 'van had to be returned to it's factory.

That shouldn't make any difference weather its German or British built if its damp its damp and not fit for purpuss and you shouln't have to fight tooth & nail to get it put right, with a new van it should be replaced or your money back no argument end of story.Ian

We had a sterling opal riddled with damp. It was only two years old and we were gutted .It was so bad that the dealership had to send it back to the factory. We refused to have anything more to do with it and luckily for us they accepted this with no argument. We were stunned to find that  a caravan so new was so bad there was no smell and it was so suprising as all there was to be seen was a slight protusion on one wall of the bedroom. We came out ok but still ended up forking out extra money for a change of van to get what we wanted . Has anyone had any damp experience with the 2011 sterling vans?

Unfortunately life isn't that simple.  The manufacturers are allowed an opportunity to rectify the fault despite whether anyone thinks there is 'no argument' or 'end of story' or any other cliche.  Obviously the country of manufacture has no bearing on warranty.

If you search under "damp" you will find countless posts about damp in British vans, frequently new ones.  Then there was the recent thread about cracked panels in new Baileys, not to mention the Stealth problems. I know not so many people have German or other Continental vans, but nevertheless there are quite a few who use UKCS and so far no-one has mentioned a problem.

We've had no problems so far with our 4-year-old German 'van, but if we do I promise to post them.
