If the caravan had been parked more closely to the next one, ie just a couple of feet or so, the air pressure between the two would have prevented the caravan moving at all.
12 days into my claim and I have still not heard back from SPI re my claim. I still don't know if the loss adjuster intends to examine my caravan in person and is so when this examination will take place.
The winter weather has set in the last couple of days with the temperature remaining below freezing today which can't be very good for the van or it's contants given that it's open to the elements. My caravan storage yard have been pretty patient as the van is till "in situ" leaning up against someone else's van.
I emailed SPI on friday asking for an update and providing them with a list of similar vans available for me to buy in the hope that it would expedite my claim and the valuation process but I have received no reply to date.....
The loss adjuster did not come up to view my van and requested that I get it back onto it's feet which I did and then submitted more photo's of the damaged side of the van.
Based on the photo's the loss adjuster was satisfied that the van is a right off. As I am still paying storage fees for the van I offered to arrange to get the van uplifted and scrapped locally (I was quoted £200) but the loss adjuster stated that Caravan Guard would want to arrange their own uplift in order that they can recover some scrap value for the van by selling it to a caravan breakers.
I personally can't see how this is cost effective for them given there are no caravan salvage yards in Scotland and the van will have to be uplifted and transported down south on a flatbed lorry. How much will they get for it from a salvage yard?
I was also asked to climb onto the roof of the van and cover the missing roof light with a tarp in order to protect the inside fixtures and fittings for breaking value. I attempted this once however the tarp soon blew off!
I do get the impression that so far I have been doing all the work re this claim and it's easy money / commission for the loss adjuster who has only had to answer a couple of emails!
On the 23rd of January the loss adjusters sent me the following email by letter.....
I write to confirm that I have submitted my report to your Insurers outlining the damage
sustained during this unfortunate incident.
I am awaiting their further advices and confirm that I am in receipt of your CRIS registration
document to enable me to progress matters swiftly.
I will contact you once I have received your Insurers further advices.
I phoned Caravan Guard for an update this morning (1/2/12) however they claimed they only received the loss adjusters report on 30.1.12 and that they had approved the findings of the report that the van is a write off.
They said they have then passed the claim back to the loss adjuster to proceed. I asked what the loss adjuster had valued my van at and Caravan Guard stated that the van had still to be valued! This was despite me sending the loss adjuster numerous links of identical or similar vans of the same age which are advertised for sale privately. The loss adjuster thanked me for carrying out this work and stated on the phone that he would be valuing the van somewhere near to the insured value of £6000.
These matters never move at the pace we want them to I am afraid. Bite your tongue and wait.
