There are some quite telling statistics there I thought. Only 25% of members use a tent for a start. The number of members who made multipal visits to their campsites seems to have decreased except in the 1-3 to stay category. Its difficult to draw any real conclusions because we would need to know the number of days camped as someone who made up to three visits could have camped for 4 weeks but somebody who made 10+ visits might have only stayed 3 weeks. Also the campers by age seems wrong as I would have thought that they would have included children which would have equalised out the difference between the age groups. I do like such presentations but just wished they backed up with the methods used.

Interesting post on the C&CC website, but I would have many questions.

The C&CC say 29% increase in the number of people, but they have sourced this information from the Daily Telegraph. The Daily Telegraph actually say, "Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that a total of 5.43 million camping trips were made last year, an astonishing increase of 29 per cent on the year before." So actually the 29% increase is on the number of trips, not the number of people. That is actually something different! There may be the same number of people who are just going more frequently, or there may be considerably more people going but with less frequency.

Now if the headline/ opening paragraph of the article is not exactly clear, then I would be asking many questions about how they gathered the information which was presented underneath is diagramatic form. The one part of the diagram idicates that those who camp between 1-3 times a year has gone up, the the rest have gone down. So the greater the increase in the number of 'visits' people make could go some way to cancel out the increase in the number of people participating in camping as an activity. This diagram doesn't actually tell me an aweful lot. Is the decrease in the (total) of one and a half tents (in columns 2-4) actually greater than the increase in one tent in the first column? How much rounding up/ rounding down has happened?

Depending on how the survey was carried out, one must assume that the sample asked understand any terms used. The Caravan and Camping Club, in it's very title, distinguishes between camping and caravanning. The diagram is headed by the words 'Camping and Caravanning', and distinguishes between 'camping' and 'caravanning' when listing the top sites. In the diagram further down it goes on to give visuals for 'campers by age' and how often people 'camp'. It is unclear as to whether this includes 'caravanners', but one assumes that this might be the case.

So you see, there are lots of questions/clarification I would personally be asking, before I took much notice!

Sorry to be picky, Caravan & Camping Club. By the way, I am a member (of both CC and C&CC) and so am certainly not anti-club. Just not a fan of this sort of presentation of information.

I have heard more negative comments about the C&CC (including my own) than positive ones...in fact I rarely hear positive ones, so hardly surprising that 3 visits is most people's maximum. I don't think it says how many members leave the C&CC each year compared to those joining. It probably remains pretty static.

I think the diagram refers to camping overall and is not specifically to do with the C&CC. I think both CC and C&CC are both means to an end. They are there to help support people who want to take part in this camping and caravanning lark! The clubs don't suit everyone. Some are members of one, or the other, or both, or none - whatever is good for them. We are members of both and visit 'commercial' (i.e. non-club) sites too. It wouldn't do for all of us to be the same. Variety is the spice..... and all that!

If they do not revamp their camping site search facility on their website soon they will be losing a lot more members. We are now phoning sites direct to book as the new system is time consuming and ridiculous!

At the moment we can't check bookings which we have made. I get the impression they are doing a little bit of work on the website.

I agree the new system is hopeless. It also took 24 hours for the confirmation email to come through so I was nervous whether my booking had even been completed.
I also had to phone the site direct as it was not clear I had an electric booking as from memory hard standing pitches also count as service pitches.
Combining this with the no pre booking Saturday night one night bookings means for me they are hardly a working family friendly club.

Even before they revamped the website I found it better to book directly with the sites because the online availability didn't seem to be kept up to date.

Both clubs are the same, Bob, from what I can see. The warden 'on the ground' have a degree of flexibility. They need some contingency i.e. if an electric hook up bollard 'goes down', waterlogged grass pitches etc. I doubt if they will release every availab le pitch for folk to book on-line.

The final straw for me was when I turned up at the Windermere site after booking well in advance and being told that all pitches were taken.
They put me in the centre of a circle of caravans, it was like being in a zoo with people watching you from all sides.

Needless to say I resigned from the C&CC after many years membership, I had seen a rapid decline during the previous few years.
