Interesting post on the C&CC website, but I would have many questions.
The C&CC say 29% increase in the number of people, but they have sourced this information from the Daily Telegraph. The Daily Telegraph actually say, "Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that a total of 5.43 million camping trips were made last year, an astonishing increase of 29 per cent on the year before." So actually the 29% increase is on the number of trips, not the number of people. That is actually something different! There may be the same number of people who are just going more frequently, or there may be considerably more people going but with less frequency.
Now if the headline/ opening paragraph of the article is not exactly clear, then I would be asking many questions about how they gathered the information which was presented underneath is diagramatic form. The one part of the diagram idicates that those who camp between 1-3 times a year has gone up, the the rest have gone down. So the greater the increase in the number of 'visits' people make could go some way to cancel out the increase in the number of people participating in camping as an activity. This diagram doesn't actually tell me an aweful lot. Is the decrease in the (total) of one and a half tents (in columns 2-4) actually greater than the increase in one tent in the first column? How much rounding up/ rounding down has happened?
Depending on how the survey was carried out, one must assume that the sample asked understand any terms used. The Caravan and Camping Club, in it's very title, distinguishes between camping and caravanning. The diagram is headed by the words 'Camping and Caravanning', and distinguishes between 'camping' and 'caravanning' when listing the top sites. In the diagram further down it goes on to give visuals for 'campers by age' and how often people 'camp'. It is unclear as to whether this includes 'caravanners', but one assumes that this might be the case.
So you see, there are lots of questions/clarification I would personally be asking, before I took much notice!
Sorry to be picky, Caravan & Camping Club. By the way, I am a member (of both CC and C&CC) and so am certainly not anti-club. Just not a fan of this sort of presentation of information.
