A Cleethorpe couple are lucky to be alive after their caravan caught fire, rupturing a gas pipe to their home, the Grimsby Telegraph reports.
Liz and Stephen Almond were woken up by the sound of "crackling" at the front of their home in Ravendale Road, Cleethorpes, in the early hours of yesterday.
Little did they know that on the driveway their caravan, worth thousands of pounds, was ablaze, their house and car were being damaged and a gas supply had been ruptured.
The couple are still in shock over the ordeal, but are thankful no one was hurt.
Fire crews attended the scene at about 3.35am, with engineers from the National Grid attending shortly after.
Liz, who is bewildered by the incident, said: "We were asleep at the time, but my husband was woken up by the sound of hissing and crackling. As soon as he looked out the window and saw everything on fire, we rushed downstairs and called the fire brigade. We have two cars, and Stephen managed to move the first one off the drive, but the Land Rover was too hot – its front is melted. As soon as the firefighters arrived, we were evacuated, along with neighbours. I could not believe what was happening."
Liz said: "The caravan, which is now in ashes, was our hobby. It is devastating to see our possessions ruined. Luckily, the insurance should cover a lot, but there will still be excess to pay. We are still waiting to hear what might have caused the fire – we have no idea. Looking back, we both know we were lucky to escape, especially with the ruptured gas pipe."
The fire also caused damage to the next-door neighbours home.
She said: "The caravan was parked next to our front hedge, which has gone, and the heat melted the front of the house. Our bedroom windows were also shattered by the heat."
Sara Wilcox, a spokeswoman for the National Grid, said: "The heat coming off the fire was of such a degree that the gas service pipe, which leads from the mains underground to the house, melted.
"This allowed gas to escape, making it a very dangerous situation. Engineers managed to keep the pipe cool and blocked until the supply was switched off from the house. All services involved acted promptly to eliminate any further problems."
