I am on the look out for a small caravan and I am clubbing all the cost together ie storage, petrol usage etc, but I just wondered how much would a service cost.
For the last 2 years we have paid around £140-£150 for the yearly service but you can pay slightly less and we have had quotes by dealers of around £200. Hope that gives you an idea.

If you are getting an older caravan, a chassis service wheel bearings/brakes/hitch will be about £70, only needed every 2-3yrs & will do the job if you want to save money. The interior you can check yourself on an ongoing basis.
We only have the chassis every other year at just under £100 usually. Check the internals ourselves. Same as at home really if you have no warranty to worry about.
If you do the internals yourself how do you do a gas test and appliance tests. I pay about £170 for a full service each year with a full checklist of items checked. Am I being conned into having a full service. I would hate to feel that after doing my own service I had overlooked a faulty gas valve or find that the water inlet valve was faulty only to find the under bed storage full of water.

As pointed out, how often do you service the appliances in your home? Probably never. If you want to save money its not hard to check the pipes ain't about to come off your water system & you can smell leaking gas easily enough.
All a habitation service does is check appliances are working, it don't clean out fridge burner, for example unless you pay extra. faults can occur at anytime so it is good to check everything yourself on an ongoing basis anyway.
I'm not suggesting that the full service is a waste of money per se, just that its easy to do the interior yourself if you are on a budget but the chassis requires mechanical knowledge & affects on road reliability so that does need to be done.
We get our car serviced every year & we will be getting the caravan serviced each year. Its first one is booked for March at the dealers we bought it from as we have a warranty. I think proper servicing extends the life of the vehicle especially as our is 10 years old.. Fair ebough, the interior could be done by ourselves but as my husband is not an electrician or gas engineer I'd prefer it to be done by the professionals. We want to enjoy our caravan safely for as long as possible
