Hi all, well we took our new van out this weekend the car towed very well and we got in to the site with no issues. We connected everything up for the first time and sat back and relaxed, we had no rain at all but the temp did drop to well below freezing. The problem we had was that the brand new bottle of gas we connected ran out on Saturday night, we did have the fire on all the time using gas and not electric, but this was only on low all the time apart from when we first got there to warm the van up.

The question is would I use a full 6kg bottle of propane gas in 1 day,? We had the van fully serviced before we collected it from the dealer, and paid for an extended warranty , the van is a 2006 swift charisma.

We have spoke to the dealership but have to ring back tomorrow when the fitter is in work, as we have sited it for the year I am reluctant to have to tow back to get it fixed but if needs must I suppose I will have to.

Please help thanks

Kev

i WOULDNT THINK SO THERE MUST BE A LEAK SOMEWHERE. is the connection tight on the gas bottle.

I asume the gas deffinetly has gone from the bottle, and you are not only asuming that it is empty, rather than a fault somewhere?

which gas do you use/

I've never managed to use a full bottle of propane in one day even with the gas c/heating on full. The questions that come to mind is; was the bottle really full, was it propane gas(red bottle) and not butane(blue bottle) and just how cold did it get

Hi KevT25, It is unlikely you would use a full bottle of gas in one day, but would very much depend on what other gas appliances you were using at same time and for how long, EG: water heater (on automatic),fridge if on gas, gas fire(low), hob/oven. Then you could possibly use one 6kg bottle of gas, you could also have a leak, you must get it checked. A full 6kg bottle of propane light (if that is what you have), will weight 10kg, it is also possible that the regulator may have a problem. Hope that helps

a full calorlite weighs 10kgs or 22 lbs.the gas weighs 6 kgs.so you could weigh the bottle to see if there is any left in.if yes lots, then the regulator is at fault not allowing gas through.if you were on a blue bottle and it was really cold it may have stopped gassing due to the temperature.

Butane gas functions okay till about + 3 degrees Celcius then it fails to flow that's why many caravanners use Propane as it functions effectively to around - 30 degrees Celcius. I use 2 x 6kg. Calor cylinders but I use the 'Calorlite' cylinders rather than the steel cylinders. They work out more expensive but I have them for 2 reasons and (1) They are half the weight in comparison so it hepls to reduce the caravan noseweight and (2) the 'Calorlite' has a built in gauge at the top with a red and green band so I can tell how much gas is remaining in the cylinder. When you purchase a refill you can also tell that the cylinder is full whereas you can't with the standard type cylinders. We had an old 1992 Coachman Caravan that operated on gas and electric for the hot water but only gas for the fire. We went out to a DA New year meet without EHU in 2009 and 2010 for 4 nights. The temperatures were struggling to get above freezing point and had to have the gas fire on very low constantly for 24 hours and the hot water was heated by gas about 3 times a day to stop the water in the hot water tank from freezing so the consumption of gas during these 4 days was quite high. However, a full Propane cylinder lasted us around the 4 days we were away so something indicates that your cylinder wasn't full to begin with. Which type of gas to use can be confusing for newbies so I hope this information helps. I have provided a link to one of the Camping & Caravanning Club data sheets which explains in detail about liquid gas which you should find helpful.

If 6kg of gas had gone in a few hours as you describe then you would have smelt the leak, I would have thought. If the connection to the bottle had been loose & leaking you would certainly have smelt it if you opened the gas locker.

First of all unscrew bottle from connector & open valve on bottle to check that it is empty. If so exchange for full & refit ensuring connections are tight. Its best to get the proper bottle spanner. Then try it again & check theres no gas smell. I'm assuming gas is propane in red bottle because only propane comes in 6kg from Calor.

If you just bought the caravan from the dealer with bottle already connected then it is possible a 'mistake' was made & the bottle was indeed nearly empty. Does the 'van have bulkhead regulator or bottle & were you supplied with spare bottle?

our blue gas used to freeze on site in the cold ,and you would think it had ran out but you could actually see where tha gas was too in the bottle as it was iced to the gas level,a bottle of gas lasts us most of a season ,so think thats what happened to you

Hi tentz

The bottle was new from a local gas stockist we did not get it with the van, I have now changed it for a full bottle so when I get to the van next week I will connect and check for any leaks, it has had a service and supposed to of had a gas check so I will check with the dealers fitter tomorrow. We did have the fire and water heater on all the time using the gas and did use the cooker but only to make toast and to warm some food with. Maybe we did use it all we must just have to get use to setting it up for the most economical way. I will keep you all informed what the dealer says.

Thanks everyone for your help it is much appreciated
Kev

Kev. It sound like something is wrong somewhere. Perhaps the gas bottle wasn't full when you had it. It might be a leak. I have to say that I have never run the fire and water heater on gas for any length of time. We always use EHU when we are away so use electric as much as possible.

I would be interestred to see what the dealer says. Do let us know.
