*But just read a few reviews from customers who have had a bad experience from Glossop, so may give them a miss too, maybe stuart longton then*

seen some very damp ones at glossop, and longtons are not much better, colleague,s van was supposedly cheacked for damp but guess what... and it took two attempts to fix

as above posts take a damp meter and check ever ylittle corner

I have never used this company to purchase a caravan but they have been helpful in providing obsolete spares for me in the past. I believe they have a good reputation but you could post an independent thread asking for feedback on them if you are interested. There is also a link to visit their website which may be helpful.

I don't believe the van has not been checked for damp. I have never yet met a dealer who has not checked for damp before he bought a van. He would have checked it for sure!

The dealer has just rang me asking why I havent been in touch over the van, I told him I was a bit concerned that there wasnt a warranty and that it hadnt been checked for damp. He said they had a damp meter there and I could use it if I wanted and nobody gives warranty with a caravan and I said I had seen some that do offer one, he said that if I spoke to them I would find out that they didnt offer one really. But ive been told by a dealer I rang that by law he cant sell me a van without a warranty, but he isnt telling me that.
I told him that basically its sold as seen and he disagreed and said if there is a prob bring it back and we will see what we can do but didnt say it would be free and he said I dont appreciate they had a "man in" and went over it with a fine tooth comb and found nothing. He also said if I buy privately they are selling a van and they will hide things from me but he wont do that. I think he wants to off load this van and he thinks he can talk me round. I do really like the van, but its too much of a risk..........

He sounds a bit desperate to me. I agree with David, he will have checked for damp when he took it in so he could pay the lowest possible price for it! Walk away!

Yes I am walking away, I would have really liked it, but as ive said its too risky. I have found someone who has said for a small fee they will come and go over any van I find that I an interested in and that takes a weight off my mind, but only through having this problem did I find this person. They work with cars and caravans and I was passed on by the car dealer I bought my car from. So now I can look privately which I couldnt do before.

Is he selling it sold as seen or as a trade sale? I'd be inclined to ask him to give it a damp check in front of you. He'll be used to doing them as part of his every day activities & he'll know where in the van to check.

Apart from that, it's a gamble you have to decide whether or not to take. For me, I'd walk away if he won't give the van a damp test. Let us know how you get on.

He said it wasnt sold as seen, but said I could do a test myself, but still wont give me a warranty. So thats the end of that, money will spend anywhere and £3000 will be welcome somewhere. His loss!!!.
I will certainly let you all know how I get on, and thanks you all for your replies and advice. This site is the best!!!

I am interested in a 1999 (costing £3000) caravan and having spoke to the dealer and found out he had tested all the appliances etc, then I mentioned the damp and if there was any and he said that it hadnt been checked for damp and also there isnt any warranty with it. If I am spending that type of money I would have expected at least 3mth warranty.
I would like your opinions please, I feel I should give this one a miss, even though it ticks all the boxes for me.
Thank you
Christina

No damp test but on the forecourt and no warranty. We had 3 month warranty on our 1998 caravan purchased in April 2011. Walk away!

BTW in the trade there is no such thing as "sold as seen" as Sale of Goods Act will cover you adequately. Unusual for a dealer to chase people for a purchase.
This dealer is obviously not very reputable so as above, give them a wide miss!

In the end it always has to be your decision, but, for what it's worth, I think you have done absolutely the right thing. There are damp free vans about at a reasonable price and I'm sure you will eventually get the right van for you. Do let us know when you get a van and perhaps post a photo.

Good hunting!

Yes I certainly will, there are a couple Ive found near me, so going later (weather permitting.) Then I will give the owners a ring and take a look inside. Then if they are what I want I can give the chap a ring to give it a once over, I will feel happier that way.
Thank you all
christina
