We got our first fixed bed caravan in 2008 and vowed we'd never have another van without one. However, we have been offered a nice non-fixed bed at a good price and I'm sorely tempted. The daytime layout feels spacious and the double dinette layout is nice for sitting and eating, but I just keep thinking about making the bed up every night and sleeping 'in the living room'.
So, to anyone out there who has a non-fixed bed model and actually prefers it, my question is.....why?
We prefer the space when we are using the 'van. Making the bed up is part of the getaway. The putting away in the morning is the sign that it another day on holiday so lets get sorted and enjoy the day.

Yep, agree. for us a fixed bed is a waste of space. We may want to spend a wet day in the van , but for the 4 of us we need as much space as we can lay our hands on. The double dinette is also perfect for family camping as two families (8 of us) can all eat in the van at the same time. We can put the beds up in a matter of minutes anyway, so it's no great sacrifice.
I've never had one, I do fancy the idea sometimes, but it's no hardship making the bed up, I often look at the caravans with the central island beds and think mmm, but we like our living space, and in order to have all of the above and an end bathroom ( which i couldnt live without now) we would have to get a larger caravan probably on a twin axle which would mean a bigger car, i think we will stick to what we have.

------------- "I'm a fool for my dogs"
Adopt a rescue, rescue dogs make great pets, don't support puppy farms.
The road can be tough and rough, but what you put in you get back 10 x more.
We would struggle with an end bathroom fixed bed single axle for space, but the corner washroom gives you the best part of 3' extra loung space & sensible length front settees.
The downside for me of twin dinettes is that the centre washroom makes the kitchen area more clostrophobic.
we prefer the the openess of the caravan and window at the back. doesnt feel as clostrophobic.also makin bed up is no problem i do this while oh takes the dogs out .

i like the space in the van ,i dont like the beds that are next to the toilet door, for sure as god the quilt gets in the way ,and i hate the boxed in feel of some of the fixed beds ,on the other hand i hate having to make up the bed and if someone is still in bed and you want to get up and have a seat there is no where to sit,i have a 2 birth ,so i would like one of the vans that has the sitting area at the front and the same at the back and no fixed bed.well unless someone gave me a big hobby or one like it !!!!
We have a fixed bed model and find it brilliant, but we are just 2, so have the front dinette to use. We had the front/rear dinette versions previously when the kids were younger and came with us. Now what we have is ideal as a 2 berth.

We will not have a fixed for several reasons. We like a large end wash-room. Those across the end are narrow. Those at the side at the end you have to walk through shower tray to use toilet ,in time cracking the tray.Majority of beds have corner chopped off. With fixed bed loss of usable daytime space.Although just two of us we always go for a four berth side dinette layout.
We have the double dinette layout and find it quite flexible for 4 of us. We leave the rear double made up if the weather is warm enough to eat in the awning or outside, in bad weather we use it as extra seating. The front seats are long enough to use as 2 singles if you don't want to make beds up. The side washroom is small but we don't use it for showers, always use site ones. Overall, it suits us and will make a good 2 berth one day. We thought the fixed beds seem to use up so much valuable space although I can understand why they are popular.
We have a 4 berth side dinette model which suits us. We prefer an end bathroom as we like to stay on CL's and access from our lane into the garden at home doesn't allow for a van long enough for a fixed bed AND a full end bathroom. I dont like the corner shower/loo set up.
The front lounge area has two long singles though and only takes a couple of minutes to make up into a double (we go for the two kingsize quilts setup, one below and one on top). If we are really bushed we have been known to just leave the beds as singles and roll up in a quilt each! The side dinette has had the upper bunk taken out, and is used by our son when the weather is too bad/windy for him to sleep in his tent (which he much prefers to being with us in the van!).
An added bonus is this layout has large kitchen workspace which is great.
OH is 6 ft 2 and we found in many of the fixed bed models we have looked at the bed just wasn't long enough anyway. In fact we have said that when we eventually change this van (probably when son aged 15 refuses to come with us at all!) when we would just go for a 2 berth end bathroom model.

Complete waste of space. That you only use when you are unconscious.
Is it really THAT much effort to make up a bed:?
Really?
Guess that's why there are so many models on the market now
you don't have to buy one if you don't like the layout, but those who do should be allowed their choice as well.

We looked high and low for a van without a fixed bed. But there was little to choose from, so we bought one. I agree that the bed is a waste of space and that the storage is a nightmare unless you box the underbed area out to prevent things flying about and damaging the plumbing and walls,
We went for the fixed bed because we had started to keep the front dinette area as a fixed bed and use the 3 seater area at the back of the van as the sitting/eating area. it worked well. We have become used to the fixed bed. It is really a 2 berth van and should be classed as such. I can not imaging using it as a 4 berth in poor weather. Summer would be ideal with the awning.
The major issue with fixed bed is the size. Being 6ft2ins tall long beds are at a premium - especially if like me you do not want a long van.
