My caravan is getting uplifted in two days time by a caravan salvage company after it was deemed a right off by my insurance company.
It has tyron safety bands fitted to the two tyres and also an alko hitch. These were additions to the van and so I was told I could retain them but the caravan must have tyres and a hitch for it to be towed away by the salvage company.
How much as Tyron Safety Bands worth and are they universal. Would Kwik Fit etc. remove the bands for me and potentially refit them to my replacement van when I find one? How much do ou think this would cost and is it worth the hassel?
Similarly with my hitch. Is it worth buying a new, basic hitch and replacing my Alko hitch with is and then fitting the Alko onto my new (2nd hand van if it doesn't have an alko hitch) ir selling it on ebay?
If the tyre fitters are used to fitting Tyron Bands they will certainly be able to remove them for you. They may charge £10/20 a wheel for doing so. Don't forget to also keep the long Allen key which comes with the bands. Saw somebody on another group looking for an AlKo hitch so there seems to be a market for them.
I take it that your spare wheel will also have a Tyron Band on it.
When I had my van which was fitted with these bands, I also had the Tyron Clamp so that I could either fit/remove these bands myself or if I had had a puncrure, the garage that repaired that puncture could refit the bands, whether they were equipped to do so or not.
I am therefore surprised that anyone who has Tyron Bands fitted, does not also have the Tyron Clamp to allow the Bands to be removed yourself.
I am not familiar with Tyron Bands as I don't have them fitted but others have given advice on this anyway. Regarding the Alko hitch it depends which model you have as there are various models with various prices. You can do a research and identify each one individually to see which type you have fitted and for the prices respectively. The models are AKS 1300, AKS 2004 and AKS 3004. Alko did manufacture an AKS 2000 but I believe it was superceded by the AKS 2004 and to sell one of these you wouldn't expect to fetch probably more than around £50 second hand. If you look at the prices for a brand new one then you can determine whether it's best to keep your existing one or purchase a new and have it fitted.
Tyron bands are rim specific so may or may not fit your replacement van. I would also expect a tyre fitter to charge about £10 a wheel. HiQ are Tyron agents so they would be able to do the removal.
If you have an al-ko stabiliser hitch that you want to keep you can remove it & fit a standard al-ko hitch which will cost under £30 from a caravan/trailer shop unless you can find one secondhand.
Hi tazhearts, With Tyron Bands at £120 a pair, AL-KO Hitch at around £200, cost to replace £320, Take them off, and replace AL-KO hitch with a normal hitch, even with £50 for removal of Tyron bands and the replacement hitch, you are still quid’s in. And if your new van has the hitch and Tyron bands fitted, you can sell your spare ones.

If in Doubt Check it Out.
Kwik fit do not work on any kind of trailer tyres, I need new tyres on my caravan, and asked them for a price at my local branch last week when they fitted me a couple of new front tyres on my car.
They say its because head office do not supply them with the calibrated torque wrenches or suitable lifting gear for a two wheel trailer, and prefare them to work within the actual workshop using the ramps/lifts and tools provided by the company due to H&S issues.

can you tell me what exactly tyron bands are/do? the couple we bought our caravan off, said it had Tyron bands fitted, but as we are complete newbies to caravanning, we didn't understand.

It's probably beyond the capability of a Kwik Fit fitter to put a trolley jack under a caravan,i would not trust them with a wheel on a wheelbarrow
When we bought our present van there were little stickers on the rims saying Tyron Bands were fitted and felt pleased but when we had a puncture on the M1 on the way to Cornwall we had all the tyres replaced later they we not in there.
