OK we are a little confused.com and would appreciate some advice!

Our AA Cover renewal is due and as usual way overpriced so we are looking into alternatives especially now we have the caravan and we are planning a 2 week caravanning trip to France in the summer.

We already have the camping and caravanning club basic insurance for the caravan.

So what we are looking for (I think!) is something that gives us breakdown cover in this country and also for our 2 week trip abroad for our car (and caravan if towing) plus possibly personal insurance abroad to cover medical emergencies too.  Although we have a Sainsburys credit card that includes holiday insurance so that could cover that part but could be easily cancelled if a combined deal is better.

So far we have the following quotes:-

Caravan Club Motoring Mayday - Basic UK recovery only £62

Caravan Club Red Pennant Single Trip Europe Motoring Only £100

Caravan Club Red Pennant Single Trip Europe Motoring and Personal Trip Only £132

Camping and Caravanning Club Europe Single Trip Only £72

Alan Rodgers Single Trip Personal and Motoring £103

Alan Rodgers Single Trip Motoring Only £61.34

We are more than a little confused with all these quotes and wondering what type of insurance everyone else has and if there is a company that does cover for everything we are needing without charging a fortune!

Many Thanks,

Jenny

Give this company a ring and discuss what your required needs are. I am renewing my caravan insurance next month with them as there was a thread on here asking about recommendations for caravan insurance and a lot confirmed that they were good even in the event of making a claim. Click on the link and under caravan insurance it tells you what they will cover plus there are many discounts too.

For a start NEVER accept the AA renewal price. Check out what the RAC and Green flag are charging for new members so you have a comparison,  then phone the AA up and say your cancelling your membership, they'll soon bring the price down to keep you. I do it every year and get it renewed at the same cost as a new member. Been with them 11 years now.

Dont the AA do a cover for europeon travel? Not sure as I have never driven abroad but worth checking.

You need 2, or maybe 3, different types of cover.

Your caravan insurance is the first, this covers damage/theft etc home and abroad.

Then you need breakdown in UK, which could be through one of the clubs, or someone like Green Flag, but do check length limits.

Then you need motoring and possibly personal cover abroad, again through the clubs or some other company.

ADAC is often recommended and can cover breakdown both home and abroad. Medical cover can also be added I believe.

We use the Caravan Club for all our cover, having the caravan insured with them, using their Mayday cover for UK, and taking their Red Pennant motoring and personal for abroad.

Not cheap, but very good.

If you already have travel insurance elsewhere, you could leave out the personal cover, depends on what you want to cover, like continuation of holiday etc.

Go for ADAC...not only does it cover you whilst abroad for you and your partner for 12 months and no trip length conditions, it obviates the need for the normal seperate AA or RAC cover in the UK.
So you get everything for about £85 the whole year.

I've got european breakdown cover with more than for around £90 a year. I've looked as best I can in the small print and can't find any obvious get out clauses. As far as I can tell the caravan is all covered but as with most insurance you only find out that you aren't when you try to make a claim!!!!!!

The main test for breakdown cover when towing is whether you are covered if the problem is with the caravan, but the car is OK.

Then you need to check for length limits on caravans.
