Not wanting to sound pitiful, as I am sure many other are in the same boat this year...  but, my OH is now out of work, and I am the only wage-earner.

We have no savings, and only rent our house, so are basically surviving hand-to-mouth..

The caravan on the driveway is my only salvation, and I would dearly love to use it this year, but the price of diesel to actually get anywhere seems so high it is almost prohibitive to even using the 'van

So, please, any tips to get away and spend the least amount of ££ would be greatly appreciated! #

You really don't need to go far to feel like you're away from it all, and often people don't explore what's on their doorstep. The great thing about being anywhere in a caravan is that you get away from all those jobs/things at home that demand your attention and you can relax and unwind. If you can be fairly self sufficient in your caravan and can use CLs then there is little more expense than staying at home. If your battery can last then a few nights on a field somewhere local would be my suggestion.

My sympathies for your situation though; it's tough surviving hand to mouth. We feel like we're in that situation a bit as I don't earn much working part-time because of child care. Our caravan has been a bit of a luxury and there are times when I wonder if we should carry on as we have to pay storage costs in addition to everything else.

I hope things turn around for you.

I would second rallies, we will be using them for most of this year, an example is we went away for the New Year (5 nights including evening meal each night) cost us £42 for 2 adults.  The only thing really missing from rallies is the electric hookup but you can do it without

Start to put a few ££££ away only if copper jar.Buy extra bits of shopping each week even if it is extra tin of beans get a box and store away till holls

Look at sites not so far away.go for the cheaper sites maybe they don't have the luxuries but basic is better than nothing,we went to a cc site it cost £12 per night with 6amp electric we were none members so always worth a call to the cc sites.

Look at what you are doing out of season if you go out often cut it down a little do without that take away put money away instead.

If you get gifts for birthdays ask for money for holiday fund.

Do a car boot before you want to go away gets rid of all the junk we all seem to gather so a good clear out as well.Sell stuff on ebay.

Good luck hope you manage to take you van out.

Fratts, I know just how you feel!

Some good advice here :). I'm going to a THS site this year at Sandend, D&G - only £6 a night. The petrol will cost to get there... but not much to stay. The downside is that there is only a field, a CDU and a tap! But I can manage without for a week or more. Just to be beside a lovely huge beach is my thing!

Another thought was that as I hate to pay bills I try to make them as small as possible. I usually put my washing on the line (even in winter - it will freeze dry!) and then onto a maid in the spare room for drying completely and airing out. So I rarely use my dryer, which saves a lot of electricity. Dishwashers are similarly very expensive to run - I don't have one now.

Another way to save money is to plan in advance what meals you are going to be having for a week, and shop accordingly, instead of overbuying and having to throw stuff away. For example, one chicken I bought this week has already made three dinners, and the carcass will be simmered until the meat falls off, then made into either a chicken and mushroom pie, or a broth. So probably five days of food (for one) for £2.50 + veg. I do the same with a pound of mince.

Definately try CS/CL sites, THS and rallies. They offer some excellent value for money camping.
Also explore sites closer to home - one of my favourite sites is only 25 minutes from my house but once on site, I could be anywhere!
Best thing is it only costs £8 per unit per night with EHU - Bargain!!

When shopping, have a look at the cheaper ranges - often these are just as nice (if not nicer) than the more expensive brands. Plcase like Lidl and Aldi do some lovely food!
Look out for BOGOF offers in the supermarkets - put the "free" item aside to take away in the caravan with you so you have some basics already and therefore don't have to rely on takeaways or eating out when away.
Buy fresh produce and cook meals from scratch - batch cook things like soup, stews, curry, bolognaise etc... and freeze 1 portion for use at a later date.
Sell unwanted items on eBay, Preloved, local car boot sales etc.... It can be surprising how much people will pay for your junka nd unwanted items!

I know how you feel. We, too, find ourselves in the same situation. We usually go to fairly local sites anyway and our favourite is only £7 per night. We never eat out and very rarely spend much on our hols. Not interested in shops anymore just happy to relax and get away from the stresses of everyday life. Think this will be even more important if OH struggles to find a job.

Just hope there is something around the corner for us all. Good luck.

Julie

If you are happy to be away from the main attractions then you can find CLs for as little as £6.50 a night. You can also spend as little as £14 for a weekend rally depending on the centre and venue, but that assumes you are a member of the caravan club. While the £40 odd may seem a little high, you can save that in a couple of weekends if you use a rally or CL in comparison to the prices of commercial sites. You will be hard pushed to find any commercial site under £20 any more.

There's plenty of cheap independent sites around. (unless by commercial you're talking about the "all singing-all dancing sites).

I can find plenty of independent sites that are every bit as cheap (many cheaper) than CC or C&CC sites, & I've saved the joining fee.

I do all my camping on a shoe-string. I lost my job 2 weeks ago as well. I have a favourite site that is just 30 miles away, it's a bit pricey at £13 per night with EHU, but only a tenner without (I can happily go without).
I live in the south east, which is very expensive for sites, but little gems are still out there.

It all comes down to expectations at the end of the day. Are you taking kids with you? If you are then their expectations will also come into it. I remember still enjoying caravan holidays with my parents right into my teens (which was only in the 90s, so not that long ago). We never stayed on sites with clubhouses, mini-supermarkets, bars, pools etc etc, but we always had a great time & never spent much money

The way many people go about camping & caravanning these days is very different. Many modern campers seem to want their old package holidays, just with a caravan or tent instead of a hotel (which is fine, not my cup of tea though & it does work out rather expensive). But there are still plenty of traditional camp sites out there, with fewer of the bells & whistles & at a fraction of the price.

Your info says you're in Cambridgeshire? I remember touring Norfolk, Suffolk & Cambridgeshire back in the 90s with my parents. I think we spent 2 weeks there in 1995, we had one of the hottest summers on record. I remember staying on a fruit farm site somewhere around there (possibly in Suffolk). It was beautiful, cheap, had good, clean facilities & the fruit was gorgeous & plentiful.

Sites like this still exist, you're in a good part of the country, with many picturesque areas not too far away, I reckon you could end up having some great trips this year. (& I hope you do).

P.S.
As money's tight this year, I've decided to do a few more long weekends (outside of school holidays) instead of one big holiday. I will end up spending the same, but I won't have to save up for ages in order to do it (I don't have any savings either, neither am I credit-worthy )

yes there are lots of us in the same boat ,we cant all have the best caravans on the best sites ,nor do i think you should be going on a bus in a tent !!!!!,and those who look down their noses at the ones who are unfortunate shame on you ,there are not many in a safe job now and we can all land on our uppers at anytime ,
you are not alone on the tight money situation ,but as my hubby says the van sitting in the yard costs nothing we dont owe anyone for it ,its ours and it doesnt matter where you go or what site your on ,as said in earlier posts you could be a mile from home and still enjoy yourself ,and be happy in the knowledge you arent paying a finance company for your fancy van or using a credit card to pay your site fees,
live with what you have and enjoy the fact you can sleep at night with enough to get by with ,something will come up for you ,put a few pounds away a week till you have enough for a wee break and hopefully other half will get a job and we will have a long hot summer ,
