Hi Everyone,

Not sure if anyone else has seen this but it was annouced yesterday that Bailey will no longer be offering their free 10yr ingress warranty on new vans. Looks like this will now be a chargeable option!

Issue Date: 21/02/12
BAILEY IMPLEMENTS A PRODUCT PRICE REVIEW

Bailey of Bristol has enjoyed another productive six months in what have been seen by many as difficult market conditions. It has built on the sales success of its Alu-Tech touring caravan ranges with the introduction of a number of innovative new models across the portfolio and has also expanded the scope of its operations with the launch of the Approach SE motorhome and Retreat Leisure Home ranges.
As a result total Bailey retail sales continue to run ahead of the same period last year, with a forward order bank now stretching well beyond Easter, and overall site stock levels also show a healthy 10% reduction.
One of the key contributing factors to this success has been a retail pricing policy which demonstrates that with Bailey innovation does not necessarily come at a price as we continue to manufacture products that provide market-leading value for money.
However, that said, as a result of subsequent increases in both raw material and component costs we have been forced to review our existing pricing structure. As a result of this review there will be an increase of an average of 1.5% on the recommended retail prices of all touring caravan models with immediate effect.
This increase has already been factored into the cost of the new Bailey Retreats plus the new Orion 450-6 and Orion 530-6 models so their recommended retail price will remain unchanged until further notice.
In order to minimise this increase we have also reviewed the overall sales package and will be implementing the following changes with immediate effect:-
1. Retailer Delivery Charge - this will increase from £545 to £565 for all touring caravans
2. Warranty Package - the period of the free 4-year extension to the standard 6-year bodyshell integrity guarantee has ended. This will now become a cost option available at an RRP of £189 (incl IPT) in the first year of ownership and with an RRP of £229 (incl IPT) thereafter*. As with the standard cover the extensions are fully transferable subject to the vehicle service schedule being maintained since new and the payment of a nominal transfer fee.
3. Vehicle service schedule - The fixed price servicing plan will end and the charges applicable in future will be as per the standard Retailer price tariff for all servicing costs.
4. Vehicle service schedule - Following a survey of the Alu-Tech caravans in use thus far there will no longer be the requirement to carry out the additional bodyshell bolt check on year three of ownership - thus reducing the overall cost of servicing.
These changes will be applicable on all touring caravans manufactured from Monday 20th February onwards with the exception of those units that have already been retailed which will retain the existing warranty and servicing package.
There are limited stocks of pre-price increase touring caravan models available on Retailer Sites and anybody interested in purchasing one of these units should contact their local agent as soon as possible.
The updated product pricing and warranty information is now displayed on www.bailey-caravans.co.uk and other associated Bailey websites.

So the theory that they offered a 10 year warranty because they had so much confidence in the product is pretty much blown out of the water then.

You can now buy an `insurance policy` to cover the additional time (note that they don`t call it one, even though the prices quoted are subject to IPT).

Do they know something we don`t?

To be fair I don't think bailey are any better, or worse, than other makes. I have spoken to other owners (soggy swift, leaky lunar, etc!!) who have had problems with ingress on their vans and I guess when you consider the numbers of bailey's in the market they are bound to have a large share of any problems due to their market share........a bit like Vauxhalls

Was it not always six years Bailey warranty plus 4 years insured extension offered free of charge?
The change appears to me to be Bailey are dropping the FOC bit to enable them to limit the price increase that would otherwise apply to cover the increasing cost of materials etc.
I would think many buying new would prefer a lower bottom line as I suspect most original buyers don't plan keeping it for more than 6 years? Even less will of course comply with the requirements year on year for in excess of 6 years to keep the warranty live.
I don't see it as any sign of Baileys lost of confidence, indeed clause 4, the dropping of the year three bolting check, implies to me exactly the opposite.

The increase in the delivery charge is an interesting one as I somehow doubt they would let you buy ex works to reduce costs. Surely it is simply a way of increasing the price of the caravan without showing it as part of the retail price.

I agree, the "delivery charge" is a complete ripoff as you dont exactly have a choice in paying it! Its a bit like buying a ticket from ryanair where they add all the "extras" on the advertised price!

Personally I would probably pay for the addtional 4 years as this will always be a selling point when you come to resell it privately, but as has been said above if you only keep your vans for 3 years many won't bother

so for £189 you can still extend from 6 years to 10 years ?
whats the problem then ? you`ve just shelled out 13K -23K for a new caravan , so just like the servicing costs, people are squabbling over a few quid extra??
notice other manufacturers have had to provide a 10 year warranty (2 years after Bailey took the lead)just to keep in touch. some "so called" better makes are still on 6 years with no prospect of extending that.
bizarre that bailey are being hammered for this , primarily by folk who dont own one ??
tin hat time i think ...oh well

Recenty bought our first caravan, a Bailey Orion. The main reason was the 10year warranty, which was the longest avaliable on our budget. Although the warranty is subject to a strict yearly servicing program.
Have noticed that other manufactures are now starting to offer 10year warranties.
I doubt i would have chosen the Bailey if they did not offer a free warranty and others do.

Others will follow by reducing or charging for extended warranty. Where Bailey lead, others follow!

I've just picked up a brand new Bailey Olympus form a local dealer yesterday and have got to say to whole experience has been a pleasant one.  It was only my wife pointing this out last night saying have you seen this that made my heart miss a beat...thinking how does this affect me!

Making big purchases can be stressful and like most people when you spend a significant amount of money you expect things to be right.  I think this makes people more sensitive to this sort of thing.  I made a call to the dealer to check my warranty and as it happens I do have the 10 year warranty (caravan built a few months ago) but if I didn't I don't think I would be too upset.

I got a good discounted price, didn't pay the delivery, got a load of extras thrown in free and the dealer was really good at handover fixing a few minor problems there and then.  All in all a good experience and if I had a to pay the £189 extra for extended warranty then that would be my choice.  Yes I have had a good experience and yes maybe that has made me more mellow...but can't really get excited for £189 as part of the overall price I've just paid.

If I didn't get the 10 year guarantee then I'm not saying that I wouldn't be talking to my dealer especially if I thought it was in the original order.  Just need to keep it in perspective.

Just my take on it all!

ps Funny how Bailey announce price increases straight after a show...they did the same after the NEC show in October (2.5% if I remember) and then backtracked and held prices   This one is prob for real this time though.
