Hi everyone, so without sounding too dumb the question i'm asking for help with is what does a motor mover do? I bought a caravan last August for the reason that i have 2 young kids and want to go away as much as pos on my own. Now being a woman with a serious back condition i really cant move the 'van on my own so i have to wait for other people on help as i have the van on my drive at home hitch in first. Is this the answer to my prays? So then comes the question which one do i need and what else goes with it? I dont wanna spend loads on one is it possible to get one for £200?

Mr Shifta is an entirely different system, the 'mark 1' of the movers, and although I never owned one, I understand that they require some manual effort to steer them as they are basically a trolley jack with a motor attached. They also need somewhere to be stored when not in use, as you would need to carry them around as a separate piece of kit, and are not so easy to use as the modern motor movers which are remote controlled.

The average going rate for a motormover fitted new is around £800, there are some secondhand ones that become available from time to time, but you need to be careful that these are suitable for your caravan fittings and weight capacity wise, and of course that they have no mechanical faults as most warantees are not transfereable to a new owner when sold secondhand.

The other requirement is a decently powerful leisure battery, ideally 110amp hrs, as a motor mover does require a well charged battery to operate properly. when you get a good one, they are the best bit of caravan kit to come onto the market for many years, and have allowed people to continue to enjoy their hobby when otherwise they would have been forced to give up.

Personally I would advise you to go for the best remote controlled mover that you can afford, even if that means saving up for a bit longer to buy it. The worst senario would be to buy a secondhand one which did not do as it said on the box, and ended up being as much use as a chocolate firegaurd and total false economy.

However, it may be worth making a few enquiries around the caravan dealers local to you, incase they have got any movers which have been removed from caravans which are being scrapped through body damage or damp ect. at least then you may be able to gain some sort of short warantee cover as part of the deal incase there was any problems afterwards.

good luck anyway,

Julia

The Mr Shifta mover on ebay may do the job for you but is a vastly inferior product to a proper motor mover. The Mr Shifta probably won't be much good on any kind of incline and won't have much traction on gravel or grass. Having said that, this is probably the only option for under £200.

Even a second hand mover is going to set you back more like £400 than £200, even before fitting.

There are cheap motor movers around, the E-go and Towsure own brand ones spring to mind, but none come even close to £200.

On the other hand, Powrtouch will price match a cheaper equivalent product and they offer a finance arrangement which if I recall correctly was pretty competitive.

I am sure someone was advertising a similar product to the Mr Shifta on here recently.

If you want to spread the cost some companies like powrtouch will offer you 0% finance and also price match. Have a hunt around and you should be able to get one fitted for around £700. I appreciate this is well over budget but most will come with a 5yr warranty for piece of mind. We had a powrtouch one fitted last year and think its one of the best things we have purchased for the van, it now means I can go and get it from storage on my own and get it on the drive with ease. Also some movers will now run fine on a 75/85ah battery, this was another reason we opted for the powrtouch model (to save paying out for another battery)

I have a mr Shifta, which does the business in pulling my small caravan back onto the drive when I get home. I don't need it for getting out, and its far too heavy to take with me in case I should need it for pitching on site! So it sits in the shed and I charge the battery every couple of months or so, and use it just to get my van back on the drive. It is difficult on gravel drives (which I have!) and I use pieces of old wooden panels beneath the wheels and have a blow up jockey wheel.

I couldn't afford a motor mover, even second hand, so opted for the Shifta, which does the job! Bought on Ebay for £160.

We have had a Powrtouch mover on both of our vans, and they have been excellent.  We definitely would not be without a mover.   We have a new van on order, but this time we are having the Al-ko mamut fitted.  main reason is that there will be no transfer bar slung below the chassis to reduce ground clearance.  Some of the speed humps, particularly in France, make the underslung bar too chancy.

Bertie.

Goodalls caravans on the A629 between Sheffield & Huddersfield  used to do second hand movers - price them up against new.
