Sombody told me that this is no good for either batteries and not to do it as it shortens there lifes? Is this correct or are they talking rubbish?

The leisure battery has to be fully charged to begin with and the car just keeps the battery fully charged when towing via a trickle charger in the caravan. What it doesn't do is fully charge the leisure battery if it was only part charged to begin with. This is when the life of the leisure battery is shortened when it has not been maintained to begin with which is checking the to see if the lead plates are fully submerged in acid and keeping it charged fully at all times. There is plenty of information on the internet regarding this so whoever told you this knows little about 12S (supplement) electric supply from car to caravan.

If you have both 12n&12s or fully wired 13pin socket on your car with caravan plugged in it will be charging caravan battery as you drive. The caravan battery will be charged from the car alternator as you drive & should charge it fully.

When you are sited with 'van plugged into ehu then battery will be charged from charger in caravan if one is fitted which it is in most modern 'vans. Neither will shorten life of battery particularly. If caravan is stood over winter, battery should be trickle charged monthly. Leaving battery discharged for long period will shorten it's life.

Agreed. this is completely correct.

The charging from the car will only serve to improve the battery's life, in the long term. Batteries start to sulphate as soon as a charge source is disconnected. See here:.....
