Been considering buy a van this year and looking for storage first.
Whilst chatting to a work colleague who has jumped into Caravaning last year, he said that he takes all his seat cushions out the van when he leaves it at his storage.
The point being that a van without upholstery is not attractive to thieves as it would all need buying - of course, someone wanting a whole set of seats and cushions for a particular van is going to be noted in the business .... not something the thieves want.
I know it's a bit of hassle ..... but, it's FREE and it may be more effective than any other device (the thieves have the answer to all devices used) - they won't be carrying a set of upholstery with them though!
you can buy sets of cushions from ebay, so i dont think it would really stop the thief that's targeting your van but would stop the chancer type thief who just wants easy money
Depends on the age of the caravan, thieves are only interested in late model 'vans, so good idea if its brand new. If its yrs old your main problem will be bits being nicked off the caravan, not the caravan itself.
Personally I couldn't be bothered with the hassle. I do not remove anything out the van when it's returned to storage. My vans 3yrs old now and there plenty more attractive ones in our storage yard. It's insured so if it gets stolen then so be it.
------------- Live every day as if it's your last but not at risk to others :-)
I thought I may put a sign in the window stating all upholstery has been removed - then remembered the thieves can't read!!
I'm not sure you can get the exact upholstery for a specific caravan from e-bay ..... can you? Certainly, the thieves would have to wait until an exact set came up - not something they would want to do.
If your store your caravan on a proper site that has barrier with keys or card and CCTV etc, no one is going to try get in I wouldnt think, being on secluded and with no security may be a better option.
Here's a thought, don't the site have to have some insurance against break ins?
Or does the individual owner have to claim on their own insurance? It seems a bit off, that someone's paying £100s a year, if they've no recourse against the site owners in the event of a break in.
Last time we had a caravan broken into it was the upholstery that was stolen, plus one of the sleeping bags.
Unfortunately I'd let the insurance lapse 'cos we were a bit skint. Lesson learnt.
We were quoted round the £900 - £1,000 mark to replace (it was a 5 berth) but eventually managed to get replacements that didn't quite match from a place in Hull that sold ends of lines from the manufacturers, cost about £450.
That was about 13 years ago, dread to think what it would cost now.

Like Bordercaz, we had upholstery stolen from our caravan too, and we got the caravan back. The cost to replace the missing cushions and have new covers so everything matched was very expensive. Perhaps they steal the cushions to put in the caravans they've nicked where the owners removed the cushions!!!!

So - that cost would mean that it is, indeed, a very good idea ...... if the cost of Upholstery is so high.
But we have no gone from removing upholstery to make the 'van less attractive to thieves who want to steal the 'van to removing upholstery to prevent theft of the upholstery itself.....
Presumably the upholstery would be stolen by thieves who have already stolen a caravan but have discovered the owner had removed the upholstery as a security measure...
