I just got the van serviced by mobile guy, every was checked, but he didnt even look at the spare under the van, or attempt to remove it from its mounting. Do dealers check the spare when your van is serviced, he has to come back, so I'm going to get him to check it then.
no some do check the spare, you do not get the gas fire or fridge checked unless you request it at extra cost.each service engineer will have a set list and price.the main dealer made a mess of our service and i had to finish it myself,at a cost of nearly £200 as well.not been back there since then.

He know he did the fire as we asked him, and were not charged any more £140 that was quoted when we booked him. We also had problems with out dealer, the service under warranty was terrible it took 5 trips for them to get it put right, 40 mile trip a time wasnt funny, I would even go back to them if they were the only place left to go
to.
Ideally you need to check the spare wheel yourself. Then you will know the tyre is ok with no cracks or bulges, that pressure is correct & you will know how to remove spare wheel yourself beside the road. Just a visual check on a tyre will tell a 'professional' no more than it would yourself, damage/degradation to/of a tyre is obvious.
Certainly the service should include a visual check of all tyres & check/adjust tyre pressures. Rather than just ask for a 'service' you should request a list of what is included in that service, then you would get the answer to your question.
Anybody who is unable to check tyres themself or cannot understand what is involved in a caravan service will have to trust whoever they pay to do the job for them.
Tentz I thank for your reply, most of the work round the caravan is done by my wife, who is not strong enough to get the wheel out of the carrier, (due to my situation) I would love to be able to check it myself. And I suppose I will just have to trust the service guy.
If the service man is coming back, ask him specifically to check all tyres for damage/degradation & to check pressures. He should also use a torque wrench to tighten wheelnuts. It is a good idea to check tyre pressures a few times between services as well. If the spare is positioned in carrier with valve downwards & to the outside it might be possible to check/adjust pressure without removing from carrier.
Hi Tentz and Richie I got the name and number of a mobile caravan engineer from the business register here on uk campsite.
He came today but onlyafter he had given me a full run down of what my service included for the 150.00 he was charging.
Inside all gas and electric was checked inc carbon. all burners on the stove and oven and grill. Fridge gas control and temperature. Fire checked and special sniffer gadget and hoover. New connector for gas bottle and hoses. Check for pressure when fitted. Water and pressure. Lubrication of items in and around the loo and fittings. Damp meter check. All windows seal check. Tightening of blinds and fly blinds. Brakes stripped and checked. All the pads were nearly new so nothing new needed other than pins. Mine is an older van but if i had needed one shut bolts they were included.
All tyre pressures were calculated and checked and inflated if needed. Visual checks were made too including the spare.
Everything was greased and i was very pleased when he gave me a full written report and a stickerlike a mot badge. He told me thar if i happened to have a problem on a site i could call any of the members of the maintenance group he was a member of and they would make a temporary repair . Advise him of what they had done so he could order spares and when igot home he would have the parts ready for me when i got home. SERVICE i think
He had to use two torque wrenches for tightening the wheel nuts up he said the caravan council had said thats the regs now and that the customer had to see both wrenches in use too.
I might have forgotton bits but he was with me for five hours and gave me loads of advice too. My first caravan and service all done.

Hi, Nice to hear there are some genuine guys out there that do a good job and take the time to do job properly, I would keep a hold of him very good service and price.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
If you have the Al-ko spare wheel carrier, periodically rotate the wheel to a new position. With ours, I found that the tyre wall took on a permanent 'dent' in each the four places where it rested on the frame. To overcome this, I made a 6mm plywood disc which I heavily varnished and fitted it to the frame to provide full support to the tyre.
The first thing I did when we got our present 'van was to ditch the underslung carrier and put the wheel under the bed.
No good, I appreciate for the van that doesn't have a bed but the thought of trying to get the wheel out, especially when we are on the Continent is too much to contemplate.
No additional weight, quite the opposite in fact, and the pressure can be checked far easier.
------------- How come when some people visit the fountain of knowledge, they only gargle!!!
You've had some good sound advice on this one Richie55, I'd add one thnig. As you've pointed out your wife does most things on the van, in the event of a puncture the RAC will only change a wheel if the spare is good so I'd have your mobile man make sure the spare can come from the van as it should and that it is in good condition ready for use.
We've used a mobile service engineer many times & he's brilliant. I won't identify him on here without his permission but he's Bristol based and worth his weight in gold.
Our mobile NCC approved workshop / CC engineer does check the spare as part of the full service. I only know this as he found a fault with the last one and we had to get it replaced. The service cost £220 and it took him about 4hours.
Our last service was around £200 odd with Highbridge Caravans. They checked pretty much everything. Carried out a couple of minor repairs which they charged us for, but also carried out a few other minor bits and pieces which they did not. So very pleased with the work.
does it no tell you on the checklist you get after the service? I thought they did check it until I had a flat and it took 2 greeen flag guys an hour to change the wheel. Reason being the spare was a ----- to get out from under the van. I wrote to my dealer and asked for confirmation re checking the spare and was told it is part of the service. Bingo - back at hem wit hte detail. BIG GROVEL. Next time - no problems. motto - check it yourself to make sure after you ahve ensured the dealer has done what he says in the sheet
