just got the report back for a caravan we were buying everythings fine with the van except where it says this,
"rear corners at rooftop slightly damp could need overseal 14%."
also
"washroom at bottom of wheel arch shows area for remedial work 20%"
i already know what i want to do just want somebody else to say the same to make me feel better
Why were you fitting the towbar on Friday? Bit painful for him I should think. Could he not use his hands to pull the caravan? Either that or a harness.
14% & 20% aren't big readings really, & those are areas prone to damp.
But, I don't know anything else about it, like age, make, model & price.
If you're paying top dollar, from a dealer or suchlike, then leave it. But they aren't necessarily bad readings, especially with all the rain we've had this week.
I would say that's not too bad for a 9 year old 'van, & the price doesn't seem too bad (although I'm really not up on prices of these sorts of vans, I'm more up on the old crappies really.
You may be able to do better though. It's still a buyers market out there ATM, but not for much longer I suspect (prices usually start to rise after the clocks go forward, which isn't far away, but bad weather will help to keep them lower for longer).
Readings between (15-20%):dealer to make a note of these readings and re-check at next service.
Readings between (20-24%):possible early signs of ingress. Look for tangible evidence or ask for a re-check.
Readings between (25-30%):moisture evident, remedial work required; may not need strip-down unless surface damage (staining, pimpling, and softness) is apparent. (There is a risk of wallboard deterioration due to retained moisture in the structure if resealed only.)
Reading (31 % and above):structural damage is occurring, deterioration inevitable. A full strip-down of the affected area is required.
Here's the detail You must make your choice. My choice is already made. There is ingress of some description. How much and how are to be decided. But there is cause for concern. Are you happy with cause for concer? If yes, walk away. If not, go ahead, buy it. But keep an eye on things and take remedial action when needed. But don't say you did not know. Your choice.
i know exactly what the readings mean!!!
as you can see im no stranger to repairing them either here
the fact is i dont have the time or inclination to do another one, if i never see any sikaflex, roll mastic or seamseal ever again it will be too soon,
so my mind was already made up

Oh that's a shame, but I know how feel, we had a caravan that we repaired and like you we never ever want to see silkaflex and mushy wood again lol. I know it's disheartening but I'm pretty sure youll find your new van soon, keep us posted :)

yep just what i was thinking, i can do without the hassle [now just got to cancel the towbar i was having fitted on friday!!]
I would keep the towbar fitting, you will then be ready for when you find a dry van.
just gutted at the minute to be honest,
we had already emptied the motorhome out booked the storage booked the towbar, the caravan was ideal for us if it had been dry, there are dry caravans out there ive just got to find one,
i asked the fella who i was buying it off if the report was ok he said "yes everything was fine apart from a couple of bulbs and the tyres are out of date" then i receive the report last night and he had failed to mention the damp bits,
i would recommend anyone buying one to have a full check up done OR buy a protimeter, they could save you a lot of time money and stress in the future,
