We have purchased our very first caravan this year and it came with a Bradcot Classic Awning.

Unfortunately as we have never put up an awning before I was wondering if someone has any 'very' easy to follow instructions for a novice?

I have found the original instructions but they make almost no sense to me! It seems to have what I believe is known as the 'Easy Alloy System'

Any help / guidance would very really appreciated as I currently don't know where to start !

We have a Bradcot awning with the easy alloy frame & even though it is our 3rd full awning, it is still fun, especially first time. If the awning is 2nd hand then hopefully the poles have been put together already as that took me an hour or so & some cursing in the lounge before our first use.  Once this has been done, it should be much easier the 2nd & sucsessive times, I'll let you know after Easter when we have done it again!!!

Depending on the size of your awning, you will have a differeing number of roof support poles, & this is not that clear IMO from the instuctions.  The people at Bradcot were very helpful with me, I'd give them a call, they may be able to confirm what you have.

In essence, the method of putting up a full awning is similar for most types so check  YouTube for videos for any advice.

Thanks Zafiral, but I have already looked on Youtube and can't seem to find anything of much help and I really don't know here to start.

I thought the 'Easy Alloy System' was meant to be easy to errect !

Try putting the poles together a few times at home so that you get a feel for how they assemble and how they should look. I presume you know how the locking mechanism on the easy alloy poles work.

I've got a 1050cm Classic with easy alloy poles but I use Dorema pads against the caravan. I start off by treading the awning through the rail and then put up the left side poles followed but the centre poles and then fit the right side. any intermediate poles can be put in place once the main shape is there. Then lightly tension the poles and peg out the corners starting with those closest to the caravan. Once the corners are done simply peg out the remaining straps remembering to cross peg any in the area of zips. If it is not windy I can manage it with my mate the lump hammer but otherwise it helps if someone can steady the poles as you are erecting them. The Bradcot easy alloy system is very easy to use and certainly quicker than the systems where you have to locate pins or turn butterfly nuts.

Thanks birder99 - I have seen several people mention 'Dorema pads' but I don't quite understand.

I can see some pads under the part of the Awning that slides thought the awning rail, and I assume the poles hook into these pads with the pads resting against the side of the van. Is that correct ?

How would the Dorema pads help this ?

The Dorema pads are just a slightly different design to the Bradcot ones. Mine is an old awning and it originally had suction pads to fit against the caravan but they are worse than useless and the only pads I could get quickly were the Dorema ones. By the way you should have some plastic pads that fit on top of the multiway pole points to stop the edges rubbing against the awning material. I always forget to put them in place and they never seem to stay in place once I do fit them.

Sorry, I was a bit short of time when I posted yesterday, but really Bradcot custermer services are very helpful.

The easy alloy system looks easy for future use, but I would recommend trying the general layout first at home as mine was in multiple pieces at first, but I now have it to the three main bits that now fold down complete together. The three bits are then easier to position compared to working out which induvidual pole is which.

It is a shame Bradcot's website has no instruction video on it.  As my awning is a 1035 mm model it has extra poles over the layout shown above.

With regards to errecting, we always do it as a pair as it is far easier than solo, especially if there is any wind!!!  We also use rock pegs even if it is on grass as the plastic pegs are hopeless.

1) Feed the main part of the awning material (with the panels unzipped for ease) through the awning channel. Attach the pad brackets to the material.

2) Errect poles starting with the middle one & then the front & rear, leave some slight slack in to assist in the next stage. Lightly peg corners and middle down to save the awning taking off. If using the Bradcot tie down straps, attach now as the attach to the frame rather than the outer material of most tie downs.

3) Zip in the removable panels.

4) Peg down the remainder of the awning & tension out the poles to remove as much slack as possible.

5) Pour yourselves a long drink, you will have deserved it!!!

Don't worry about looking like beginners, we still do after 6 years & the one thing I have found is that there will always be someone on site to help if you need it, us 'vanners are a friendlt bunch regardless what you may read elsewhere!!!

That great advice - thanks Zafiral

I got the awning out in the bit of sunshine we had the other day and I must say I was rather disapointed in the condition of it.

The fabric seems to be quite grubby and has a few green stains on it.

Is there anything that we can use to try and clean the fabric? Would a pressure washer do any good ?

It sounds like it has been put away damp....

We have some awning cleaner we got from a camping shop, but we haven't used it yet..... I wouldn't risk a power washer.
