Hello,

We have booked 2 weeks in Cornwall in the summer.  I am wondering which route you would take from Suffolk to Cornwall, how long you think it might take and which day is least busy to travel out of Saturday, Sunday, Monday or Tuesday!

Will be towing a Bailey Olympus 525

Many thanks,

Emma.

Sunday is always the quietest day to travel, especially if you crack off a bit sharp in the morning.  Difficult to avoid the M25 but depends which way you come down to it. If you access from the M11 then the obvious would be anticlock to the M4 then M5.  If you come in from A12 then clockwise over the bridge  and personally prefer the M3 then A303 which is a farmore pleasant journey with plenty laybys etc. Timewise, would have thought  about 6 or 61/2 hrs depending upon the pit stops and how far down you're going......Mick

Depnds on where in Suffolk and as for timing, wherabouts in Cornwall, as there could be hour plus difference between top and bottom

Can you travel early ie 3 or 4 am start? Getting past M25 is usually the biggest hurdle on any day so an early start may rid that problem. I probably wouldn;t choose to travel on a Saturday in the summer holidays as it will be a busy changeover day in Cornwall as well as this end

We do the drive from Berkshire to Norfolk a lot to visit family. If it was me I would go for the motorways for ease of towing and would probably do the A14/A11, M11, (or down the A12 if you are Ipswich way) M25, M4 and then M5. Not a very exciting route but nice and steady and you will be able to stop at a choice of M4 services for a break after the first few hours. The other option could be to come off the M4 at J13 onto the A34 then go down this and pick up the A303 down to the A30.....more scenic but a lot more roundabouts!

I have always found Sunday PM a nightmare on the M25 so as long as you are going in the morning a Sunday should be ok. Personally I like starting a holiday mid week as you often find the sites quiter for checking in and sometimes get a bigger choice of pitches as a lot will be going for weekends only. In terms of time I would say that Suffolk to Berkshire is probably around 2.5 to 3 hours on a steady tow then Berkshire to Cornwall could be anything from 4 to 6 hours depending on where you are going to. We will be going the other way to Norfolk in June with the van for 10 days and normally stop somewhere at the start of the A11 for sandwiches in the van in a layby as a hate motorway services!

So if it were me I would do the Tuesday and go the motorway route probably allowing around 7-8 hours to include at least 1 or 2 short breaks. It could be longer than this depending on where you are starting / finishing from.

Maybe consider an early get away if you haven't got young kids......we used to leave at 6am and meant we could miss all the M25 traffic and be there before lunch!
