Hi All, Is it possible to overcharge my battery whilst attached to van. I made the newbie mistake by letting it go flat, filled the dry cells and charged it up off the van hoping it would be Ok. Been away for the weekend and the smell drew me too the battery which had boiled over, never seen it before, the battery casing was hot, with smoke coming from one of the cells. Plan to get a new one but concerned the built in charger could be NG.
Once the battery has gone flat it can then become quite defective. Residues from the acid leave deposits and when you try to charge it up again they simply burn. It is probably sulphur you can smell.
If you placed back into the van and it has been charging via the on board charger then I guess that some fuses should have blown.
It may be sensible not to lift it up without protective gloves. Take it to your nearest tip for disposal. Its no use to anyone.
Phil

does sound like youve just killed your battery, put you charger on and a mulitmeter accross the battery terminals and see the voltage coming out, youll have an idea what volts are coming out then
Bejesus mate, ive just read ur post you dont know how close you may have came to the thing blowing up.Ive said on here that ive only seen one battery explode a number of years ago and it blew the door right off god knows the damage inside the van..
It also sounds as if the charger is knacked, just like mine you have described it.Battery getting hot, loosing water.Maybe Michael can tell us of price of replacement?
hi jeff ,charger may be ok but is trying to charge a faulty battery.can be checked with a meter without being fixed to a battery.with EHU on it should be giving 13.5 to 14 volts at the battery lugs.battery lugs MUST be insulated if no battery present or you could blow the charger if it touches the body,
