Am so disgusted with the aftersales of this company. I had some jobs done under PDI re-work in August 11 (as they didn't get done when I asked for them too be done before collecting). The jobs were mainly done and I thought I was in the clear. However I was waiting on a new cupboard (I was told this was ordered but later found out its no longer manufactured). Anyhow I fixed this myself. Since then I found out that I had some water ingress, only minor and a simple case of replacing a window rubber, however I noticed some delamination in the floor directly next to the area that Glossop had previously repaired. I am told by my engineer this is because the original repair didn't extend fair enough so has spread. Glossop are refusing to do the work as they say my 12 month warranty doesn't cover this or the ingress. Im not too fussed about the ingress as my engineer will do it and says it would only cost about £12.00 for materials but feel they should do the delam. The warranty company say I am covered for the delam but as the cause is poor workmanship they won't do it as poor workmanship is excluded. Glossop are still refusing to carry out the work and have taken to ignoring emails, letters and never return phonecalls. Recorded letters are only signed for by "caravans" so that it can't be identified which staff member has signed for it.

We have not had any problems with Glossop but even one badly handled complaint can cause big problems.

Having said that i would not have bought a van with damp problems in the first place.

If it was me i would fix it myself knowing then it was done right and then put off as many potential customers as possible and tell them so.

Seem to remember they had a lovely warm sales office you could go and sit in and make lots of noise about how badly they have treat you in front of a few new customers.

We have ordered our new van from Glossop as they did us the best deal on it, since ordering it in Jan I have rang them several times and they have never returned our calls and we havent even received our van yet. Im not expecting the aftersales to be any better, from our experiences of buying new vans weve never had good aftersales from any dealer we have used,  it seems once they have your money that it! They wanted us to take our van in weeks ago to trade it in even though our new one hadnt even got a date for build, I told them noway, but, weve had to take it in at weekend to have the mover taken off and our new van still wasnt in. I was dubious about leaving it as they left the doors unlocked with the keys inside! I told the guy I wasnt happy and that was still my van, his reply was, well if it gets knicked we will have to replace it!! can you imagine the battle with that one?  Anyway we will see what happens with them as we are due to pick our new one up on Saturday even though it wasnt it yet? Good luck with your repair work.

Can I just say that I have bought two caravans from Glossop Caravans, and I wouldnt return. The first one was a bargain basement which they sent out with a bulge in the tyre wall(!) could have killed us all and a water system that not only did not work but could not be fixed and they had to install a new one but it took some complaining to get it done. I traded my bargain basement one in for my lovely bailey delamere but they shafted me on that -sending it out with the grey charging cable not even connected and I didnt realise until I changed the car for a dual electric towbar, by which time it was too late. If you are in the North West and you want to buy a caravan I can heartily recommend Read Caravans in Blackburn. Honest, friendly, efficient. I have just bought my new Ancona from there a year ago and they are they way caravan dealers should be.

"the cause is poor workmanship"

Whilst the poor workmanship may not be covered by your warranty agreement it will be covered by the Supply of Goods and Services Act which indicates that such work must be undertaken with reasonable skill and care. Their failure to satisfy the requirements of the Act means that they are in breach of contract and for which you are entitled to redress at law. i.e. they have to put it right.

Get your engineer to confirm in writing that the problem is down to poor workmanship and send a copy to the MD of Glossop and quote the legal position and ask him when he proposes to remedy the defect.

If you get no sensible response then get your engineer to quote for the work and demand the company pay you that sum otherwise you will sue them. If there is still no joy then off to the County Court.

Phil

I had heard some better things about Glossop lately and we nearly bought from them in 2010 - Leisure Sales in Sandbach are also very good.

Thanks Phil, I only notice the initial delam after I had done the deal and it had got worse. The cost of the both repairs is only £100.00 so I am getting my engineer to do the work (he is a friend of mine). I did issue them a letter advising I was going to take legal action and sent it recorded delivery to Brian one of the directors but I didn't get a reply from them. As it would cost me £50.00 to issue a claim through MCOL & then any subsequent applications (hearing fees, strike out defence etc) are £45.00 per throw so it didn't seem economical. I know the guy I use will do the job right as well so get peace of mind. I had an issue in October with them whereby when my motormover was being fitted by Reads in Blackburn they send me pics of the tyres. These had deep cracks on the inside wall and tread and were dangerous, yet somehow managed to pass a PDI. I had the tyres changed and challenged Glossop who accepted liability and re-imbursed me for the cost of the tyres. They just seem a cowboy company and I want people to know what they are like before purchasing. I would definately agree with Cheryl.Mark that Reads in Blackburn are very good. Never heard a bad thing said about them and a lot of my friends have bought from them. They have been brilliant in the limited dealings I have had with them too.

Just a quick update I have had a letter through on Friday from an enforcement officer at trading standards who are going to look into my complaint further.

i had a similar ordeal with tourer world, west yorks, i bought my van and was promised it would all be spot on! it wasnt! back light hanging out on delivery, one drawer needed fixing, clock did not work (got another from the bay)no carpets, so they had some made but did not make a bathroom one ,they said carpets dont go in bathrooms, they lied! no remote for stereo, dents on near side which i did not see as all the vans were all packed in tight, but they were not mentioned! one front window blind had a clip missing so when pulled down it would only hold on one side,
upon complaining tourer world made me feel like they were the victims, but when you are giving the thick end of 11,000 for a caravan it should be right,
salesmen eh!!!

Matt,

Which trading standards are you dealing with?  We would like to contact them in relation to Glossop as well as we are in the middle of a now 14 month saga with them.

We bought our Buccaneer caravan 2 years ago. It had some snagging to be done before we picked it up - the most serious being damp in the bathroom and the front end. After the repairs were supposedly carried out we sighed for the caravan and took it to Wales and was really happy, that was until our first service. It was found that the bathroom wall had been covered in plastic to hide the damp which was showing 80% and the front with a reading of 40%.
Glossop Caravans asked us to tow the caravan back to them from Wales, which we did the 350 mile round trip at our cost so they could rectify the problem which should have been done in the first place.
After 6 weeks in their workshop waiting for parts we towed the caravan back to Wales. This year after another service we find the front end which should have been rectified last time and the time before that, hadn't been done and the damp was now reading 60%.
Once again I phoned Glossop Caravans and was once again asked to do the 350 miles round trip and tow the caravan back to them, refusing to let one of their approved service centers in Wales do the work, because they said it would cost them too much money. But what about their customers who not only have to take time out of work but also pay the fuel back and too to Glossop for the second very unnecessary time????
Be very careful if you buy, or have any repairs done. And don’t expect any work to have actually been carried out just because it’s on their work sheet. Or better still just go somewhere else and save yourself the money, hassle and heartbreak.
