Just thought I would make members of this forum aware of a change that the CC have written to us about this week in relation to the Longleat site. For those of you that have visted there before you will be aware that access was always "in" via the main gate and "out" via a small (i.e narrow with sharp bends) lane on to the A362. This seemed sensible and avoided the risk of outfits meeting in opposite directions. According to the letter the CC have sent out today the estate are now insisting that all members visiting the site have to use the A362 lane for coming in and going out. They are going to ban late depatures and state everyone leaving must depart before midday with no arrivals before 1pm.
Now with our older smaller van I would probably not be as concerned but using this lane for access and egress is, in my opinion, crazy as it will only be a matter of time before 2 vans meet and the result will be a blocked road. As it is this lane is used by farm vehicles and delivery lorries so I really can't see the logic in this change. It has caused a fair amount of debate on some other caravan forums with some people with bigger twin outfits saying they are considering cancelling booking.
Its such as shame as the drive in via the main gate towards the house was one of the nicest approaches to a site we have visited. I will be keeping an eye on the site reviews over the next few months and if members start reporting access issues with the lane will probably cancel our September visit and go to another site.
There is also some strict changes in relation to dogs which will mean they can no longer be taken onto the estate grounds so those of you planning to visit with dogs need to be aware that they can't come out of the CC site area (doesn't effect us but thought I would mention this).
Admin - If possible please can you leave this in the caravan section, as opposed to the campsite section, as this only has a relevance to caravan owners as tents aren't allowed at the site.
Never used this particular site but now you have drawn my attention to it i dont think i'll risk meeting someone on the way in lol If it aint broke why try and fix it ??????

I smile besause I have'nt a clue whats going on... appreciate everything in life especially your friends...
dazzer252, i take it your not worrying about the A362 its self just the lane you turn into,(from what i remembers isnt a nice lane full stop) as the a362 has no weight limit from the frome end and is used alot by hgv's as a cut through to warminster etc
i cant see that lasting over a year, maybe longleat are making it difficult so that the club pulls out then they use the land for there own overpriced site.
Seem to remember reading that this change has been forced on CC. by Longleat who are stopping the use of the main entrance, and same with the no dogs in grounds rule.
I went on a Caravan Club rally there last year, on the grounds of the safari park along side the house.
Apparently, the new Lady Bath considers caravans an eyesore and had the rally moved around the side of the house so that she couldn't see them as the rally was usually on the opposite side of the road and overlooked by the house.
It seems too much of a coincidence that the entry has been changed to the club site to avoid passing the house.
I live close to Longleat (can see it from my bedroom window). There is a LOT of bad publicity about a number of changes going on. To walk in the grounds around the house locals now have to pay an entrance fee whereas for the last 200 years plus we have been allowed to wander.
Dogs not now allowed on site.Stopping cycling through the grounds despite the fact that it was part of the national cycleway. (currently under review They also forced aged employees to retire last year just before the law changed allowing them to continue after 65.
These changes have come about since the marquis of Bath handed over to his son Viscount Weymouth. He appointed a professional manager head hunted from Legoland.
Tis of course his land his rules but this has all been done in a very arrogant fashion without notice or consultation. The first locals heard was when walkers reported being marched off site by security guards.
I've cancelled our Oct half term booking today, OH is a nervous tower at the best of times and reading this has put us right off. We'll find somewhere with easier access.

Oh is thinking the same for us......may try the CC at Cirencester instead. I am going to keep the booking for a few months in case they see sense! I hope some people write in about this and make the estate realise how much revenue they will be loosing. Most guests to the site will buy tickets for the estate, plus food, so really can't see the logic with this at all!
